There is a lot of play in my shaft log. There isn't any bolts in it and looking through the holes in the log all I can see is bare metal. I
can't see how the bolts or studs could have sheared off or corroded away without leaving a trace. There is a steel lip welded top and bottom which prevents it being unscrewed from the stern tube , so I can't get it off to have a look.
Was it designed to have play in it? and what is the purpose of the steel lips? Has anyone out there come across this arrangement before. It is a Dutch steel boat BTW.

hi the 2 boats i have do not have any play in the shaft log. and i would not have thought your log would have any play. i am guessing you can not undo shaft from gear box and unscrew the stern tube from in side the hull.may be grind the welded lip off. nothing is ever easy. garry

I guess cutting the lip off and tightening things up and then welding the lip back on is the answer. I can't work out why they didn't just bolt it on in the first place.I thought maybe I was missing something.

hi i guess it does need to come off for you to check it out then bolt it back. if you need a couple of bolts to refit , i do have some spare and a little bit of stud bar both a4/316. free of charge of course. seem to amassed a biscuit tin of different sizes. may have the size you need. garry.
