Anyone care to speculate on how much the lack of a service record affects the value of a boat, say, as a percentage of the resale value?

TIA

um, not a huge amount.

With all the service records, the boat will still be subject to survey, remeber Deleted User's oil survey resuikts - he didn't say aha - all the service records, no prob.

With engine guarantees, invoices is all that's needed. Without these yes spose value reduced.

But if there are no srvice records, then it's likeluy that the boat is not in a great state either, and it's for all of these reasons that the boat is worth less. But not THAT much less - there is a floor through which only real damge lets the boat fall freely in value.

Note that a really really well maintained boat might have lots and lots of bills ,and a wise seller will hold some of them back - not wanting to show much loot it costs to maintain the boat in this condition.

On tother side, the right boat in good condition, out of warranty enginewise will always sell more easily than one with service records but shagged-looking, imho. But the same two boats, one with service records, one without? Erm, not more than 5% i wd say.

Ta. For clarification, 3 year old Thingyline, 250 hours, bought direct, but after months of trying, they still can't produce the service records, bills or anything else. Engine oil analysis came up good, but thinking in terms of future resale value with no records for first three years...

What's the cost of putting in new engines? Half the figure and reduce from price would be my guide. The engines are outside warranty so you've then covered yourself for anything major. Plus, I take it when you resell you'll have your own service records to show - so that'll make up for it, especially if you have a major service carried out at the beginning.

none, but I can't prove it. Survey and current inspection should reveal how much an engine has been neglected or otherwise, and a good look into the eyes of the vendor

interestingly where would an owner service log fit with this? Once the engine is out of warrantee, and on 'simpler mechanical' engines like the Yanmar you only really have :-
Changed Oil
Changed Oil Filter
Changed Fuel Filters
Cleaned /Changed Air Filter
Changed Zincs
etc
At the heady end of it you get to a quick clean of the turbo, adjusting the tappets the odd impellor change but with only one of these you could be up over the thousand hours - and I haven't seen a boat advertised yet with more than that on the engines!!!!

As the important thing is that the above are done at the right (optimum) times, rather than who does them or even how they are done in most cases, would you be happy with a little book detailing the tasks done ie maintance log from a value perspective rather than dealer records?

well, if they really have had the services, just got no docs, then the companies who provided those services will almost certainly have the copy invoices.

I just keep major "presentable" invoices. So, no records needed for repairing gelcaat whams or replacing rusted gear, just services and liftouts.

As you know, if you keep the boat a few years, the first three years becomes less relevant. I mean, if the oil analysis showed the thing is shagged, who cares about the servicing? By contrast, just cos someone has the service bills it wouldn't mean that people would not have a survey, would it? The service bills would not nec put me "on" or "off" a boat, and the fact that above-medium intelligent perosn such as you (or was it a mate?) bought the thing shows that service records aren't a thing in their own right - it's their product - a working boat that is their main aim.

Ah, well, yes. Erm. My 'friend' bought the boat, on the assurance that the records did indeed exist, honestly, sir. They're on my desk right here. Oh, no. It looks like the cleaner's moved them. I'll find them and get them right over to you... Oh, I've found them but the office cat's been sick on them. We've had them sent away to be dry cleaned.

In which case, I'd say that your "friend" has been the subject of a misrepresentation and that (assumes Sc*use accent) he's due some compo. If I remember rightly, your "friend" was sold a boat from stock, presented to him as being lightly previously enjoyed and almost as good as new?

Poor show!
