Semi-Displacement/Planing

Thanks to all the people who replied to my first posting. In answer to some of you questions:

I live in the south of France and have been boating here for about 6 years. My present boat is a Searay 240 Sundancer (planing hull) and my cruising area is about 20 miles from Port Lavandou. The Searay handles quite well in the short sharp seas around here. However, I would like to venture further and think a semi-displacement may be better for extended voyages especially at speeds around 16 knots, although I have heard that semi-displacement hulls give a wet ride.

I have never had any experience with semi-displacement boats and therefore do not have a clue of the fors and againsts. Besides, the wife won't let me change her much beloved Searay until some of you kind boating people have given some advice.

Regards, Tallon

In the Med I'd stick with a planing boat. I know it can get rough over there but that seems to be the exception rather than the rule. Yes semi displacements can be very wet but do tend to cope better with rough seas. They also use more fuel.

Even though I have a semi displacement, if I were to own a boat in the Med it would have to be a planer.
