selling the slug and buying a mobo

navigate by video?

In the end shot on the "harbours video" its rather alarming to see a yottie navigating by looking at the video as he helms up the estuary/river! Whatever next! I'd prefer that he looked out for others on the water and the odd navigation mark using mark 1 eyeball! And anyway who's want to spoil the surprise of a new port by having it covered on video before you arrive? Removes much of the mystery, surprise and romance for me!

at home

I think you're getting bored, Dylan, sitting at home in this weather.

I have been at home colour balancing and sound mixing films - which is pretty dull stuff to do - when I would rather be out in the slug filming the birds and the creeks in winter

by and large - although it has been pretty cold recently - might even be three sleeping bag weather.

Eeeek - I hope he doesn't do the voiceover on them. I dozed off watching the trailer.

well they are aids to good pilotage as opposed to ktl style narratives

the idea is to convey information so the diction is perfectly clear and I assume the information is deadly accurate -

I have never claimed such things for ktl

my films are getting quite a reputation for their innacuracy, lack of RYA approved sailing precedure and occasional innapropriate language

Headline in Daily Star "Dylan Winter becomes a rocker, sells his horse and buys a moped"

Don't think so somehow. I remember your travels with Dolly on the radio...ooooh how many years ago was that:eek:

18 years I believe

Molly, the canal boat pulling Welsh Cob is now long gone

30 tonnes it weighed and she did an excellent job - she died about ten years ago now

but she gave of herself to a higher purpose

- I would like to think that her hoof glue was used to bind the spines of YBW

Actually that is the bad thing about horses - they grow old and die -

with a boat you can keep screwing and glueing bits back on until you have none of the original left

I am thinking of renaming the slug "Epoxy"

I think on balance I agree with Dylan.

There seem to be just two possibilities

1) The moboists didn't see anyone else

2) The saw them and did not give a stuff

BYW I am neither raggie nor coastal moboist so tending towards impartial.

Only in Essex

"that is one beautiful boat"

Looks like a soapdish with something cheap and nasty from "Millets Camping Section " on top ...................

I am thinking of selling the slug

and replacing it with a mobo
I can't see you on one Dylan

A serious response.

I have often considered a little Shetland cruiser as a viable option to sailing the East Coast rivers.

They take the ground, have loads of comfortable space, can be trailered and may be powered by a small 4 stroke o/b which CAN be pretty quiet when used responsibly. Of course this should be removed and serviced during the periods of non-use.

Given the fact that much of the time is spent on a mooring or at anchor I often wonder about the sanity of all of that semi-perishable rag stuff, wires and ropes etc for the limited amount of quality sailing we get in this country.

Just a thought.

but you would miss out on all the shallow bits

It is a beautiful thing inside - and it won't plane so not too much in the way of a wash I guess

but....

you would miss so much of our wonderful estauaries and backwaters

with that sort of money you could buy 100 slugs

If I had the cash I would have the slug electrics sorted out, buy a new genoa that ran the full length of the forestay, buy a spray hood, fix the gear change, keep the slug in a marina in the winter where I could plug into the electric for a bit of warmth and buy another polo because the old one now has 130,000 miles on it and is getting a bit tired and start wearing yachting boots instead of green wellies.

I would then keep the rest of the money to finance the journey without making the films that seem to upset mobo owners for some reason.

Currently working on a film about Orford

That old Hugh Bigod - and his dad Roger - what a family!
