lots and lots of people deal in larger cash transactions all the time. Maybe, just not you and I.
Call a branch of your local bank and ask them, but Id say bankers draft really is very very safe, and even cash as long as you take it to the bank and they verify.
But ask the guy for some Id- passport, utility bills etc. Crickey, even Blockbuster want that. Yes there are some dodgy characters, and yes there is fraud, and yes of course you dont want to be ripped off, but you can easily narrow the risks yourself. Dont be freaked that its cash, thats all.
One small one the bank might ask is if the price is realistic and being met in full. Buying a boat and losing 15pct on selling it is a cheap way of washing money. But that doesnt mean every cash trader is a money launderer....

Ask yourself why this character wants to pay cash. No normal honest person has 3Grand in folding stuff in his pocket.

Total rubbish!

I have always bought cars for cash, I once handed over £7k in cash. It is easy, no messing with clearing. Pay the cash and drive home in the new (to me) car.

I did not realise that this makes me a suspicious character, oh well, if my cash is not good enough for you, then you would lose the sale.

A bit prejudiced I think.

Me too Woofy!

When it comes to a bit of haggling a nice bunch of twenties speaks for itself and can often help to negotiate down the price.

My usual method is to have The asking amount (assuming it is listed as ONO) less maybe a hundred and will state how much is in the bundle. I will have the difference in my back pocket with an ability to take out £20 at a time.

I last used this method last year to buy my Laser. The seller had previously sold this boat to a chap some 100 miles away whose cheque had bounced. When he had contacted the buyer to notify him he was told "that he had better come and pick up the boat then...." He then had to make a 200 mile round trip to recover his boat.

My nice bundle persuaded him to close the deal there and then for £150 less than he was asking.

Result!

With all this talk of bouncing cheques, forged or stolen bank drafts and counterfeit notes you're just going to have to take along the old wheelbarrow and ask the buyer to fill it with coin of the realm.

Same here, handed over almost 10K in cash for a car a year or so back, they insisted on it. All the notes were sealed in Nat West bags, so no problems there. Also sold a boat for cash in the 80s for about the same amount, sat in the pub afterwards with over 9 grand in a bucket!!

So no, you're not a criminal just cos you pay/accept cash!!!

I am sorry to hear of your experience, especially for your son. My previous reponse to this post is exactly why your on has suffrered. There may be plenty of reasons why people may want use large cash transactions to do business e.g. Money taks etc but in my view if people are not willing to trade in more up todate, secure and reasonable methods then I would be suspicious.

Regards.

Who is benefitting? The poor wife that's being deprived of assets, the Tax man, so we get taxed more? but more importantly have you bought the boat from the owner? I have never been through a broker and been given cash for the sale of a boat!

Regards.

Here in Oz cheque accounts at the bank are quite expensive and the fee for a bank draft (bank cheque as we call it) is quite high. So I tend to resort to cash and have recently for various things thought nothing of withdrawing large amounts of cash. I mentioned in small talk what it was for. sometimes it takes a few minutes for the bank to produce the cash. Tell em it is the bank fees that cause me to resort to cash. Sure it is a worry carrying cash so get rid of it quickly. I would suggest that if anyone passes bad cash to you the police are far more likely to be interested than for a bad cheque. So yeah I would expect anyone to accept my cash.
good luck with the sale olewill

IMHO there is only one type of money and that is CASH, pound notes. Give me a fist full anytime.
I do a bit of dabbling and have always paid by real money and prefer to be paid in the same way, nice crispy fifty pound notes are far better off in my pocket then in a bank.

Australian banking

Two fundamental differences I noticed between the Australian & British banking systems: The consumer competition revolution hasn't yet reached Australia yet so the banks can and do still get away with levels of charging that were commonplace here 20 years ago and the Australian notes are a sight harder to produce convincing forgeries of.

Thank you every body that has replied to me lots of food for thought, maybe my idea of cash being a prob was not that daft, it will just be a bit embarrassing telling somebody you need to take them to the bank though.

Chaps is a faster (and more expensive) form of BACS - instead of taking a few days in transit (more if going abroad) it is "instant" ... but you have to pay for the service ... for a personal a/c CHAPS (in my experience) is around £20-25.
