my boat is in Lefkas marina. It is possible that I will have to sell her, which gives rise to some questions
1 do I lorry it home or do I sell her in the Ionian?
2 do I sell her in euros or sterling?
3 what time of year?
4 do I use a UK firm or a local one? or even a private sale

I am in a similar position - except boat is in Corfu. Very difficult to sell there as the market is stuffed with used boats. Buyer will almost certainly be Brit/N European so viewings only likely in May-October.

Potential demand depends on boat. "Med" style boats such as my Bavaria have to compete with loads of others, particularly ex charter. Rarer boats, particularly "blue water" style have limited appeal so depends on how attractive (cheap?) to entice people again from N Europe.

Trucking back is possible - sail up the Adriatic to Slovenia and pick up a return truck delivering boats to the Med. Approx cost last time I looked around 4000 euros to Holland, plus of course handling costs. Alternative ship from Piraeus about £14k to Southampton.

Brokers - W&S in Levkas, Greg Yachts all over Greece but based in Athens. Also worth talking to Chris Hawes at www.yachtfractions.co.uk

Hope this gives some ideas

another way ....

How about a crewed / 'own keel' delivery? £4000 + fuel is about right. We deliver a lot of boats back for sale in the UK. Of course the proud new owners often then simply sail back to the Med. Mad world, but keeps us yacht delivery people happy!

What boat, condition, age, etc.

Some are ok in UK market, some best left in Med.

Probably simpler to sell in Lefkas. Depends how urgent you need to sell and what you have. Have you considered selling shares? Set up a syndicate and divide the ownership by 4.

Selling in Ionian

Your problem, as I see it, is that getting to the Ionian is relatively difficult and expensive. Charter flights only go in to the airport near Levkas in the summer. So unless the price is very attractive, or someone is scouring the area for a boat, then you are unlikely to find a buyer. I personally would forget Greek options altogether.

Maybe you could consider a delivery to Palma Majorca or to Almerimar in Spain. Easy and cheap communications from northern Europe, U.K. to both places. Palma has much more visibility, but Almerimar is cheaper for storage. I don't remember any high profile brokers there. Maybe in the northern Adriatic? Don't know the ground or communications there.

Private sale is likely to be a long old process. Who do you get to open the boat up and answer the punter's questions. How do you market it? You could get a web site together, and place small ads drawing attention to it, or put it on a web site e.g. Apollo Duck

Depends upon the boat, age, condition, value and price you want.

There's a broker just outside the Club Nautico in Palma who is now linked with Berthons in Lymington, can't remember their name as their card is on the boat!

Also a broker on the Hamble said to me last year that they have enough trouble trying to get prospective buyers to go to Lymington never mind flying off abroad!

So wherever you decide to take the boat you need to make it as easy as possible for people to come and see it!
