Here is an Atlanta built in 1958 with foils.

I suspect that boat was built 1958, but the foils were added much, much later! (Possibly by Photoshop?)

But foils, at least powered ones, go back way longer than that!

First British patent for a hydrofoil was 1869, and here's a powered one in action 1909.

Took a while to get to the point where they were usable for and applied to sailing vessels, though.

My dad used to have a copy of the book 'The 40 knot sailboat', which covered the state of the art in fast sailing in the early sixties. There was a section on Monitor, at that time the fastest foiling boat ever built (I think). It didn't get close to 40 knots though... That took carbon fibre, exotic laminates and resins, computers and all the rest...
