I think that access for servicing and removal is an issue that counted favourably towards engines in pods rather than blended into wingroots.
DH and the Air Ministry kind of blew the whole thing by dragging the tests out rather than just slapping in some nice round windows inplace of the naughty square ones (they already knew what the problem was, but the ministry insisted on proving it in tests). If they had been a bit more on the ball they would've/could've/should've beaten the 707 into widespread use. hindsight's a wonderful thing, but you can't help but wonder what might have been if we had had a government worthy of the task.
