Security and safety of your boat during COVID

We have a number of members who are very local and part of their daily walk is via our club berths, if they see any issues they have been asked to contact any of the GC members, the relevant members can then be informed and the member can decide on action needed. We are a very positive self help club With members as you are many miles away and never has a member been left stranded.

It’s not an easy situation to manage. I recently read our gig club insurance policy, looking for guidance about qualification for people coxing gigs. It was an illuminating read, full of insurance double speak and took far longer to read than I liked. What finally emerged was that, contrary to the interpretation of past committees, no formal qualifications were required for coxing just a value judgement by “someone responsible”. Equally, anyone in one of our giga or using it is covered provided they have permission to do so. No need to be a member, again contrary to years of practice within the club.
Why bother relating this? I’d be asking to see the policy document to see what conditions within it prevent the club participating in a neighbourhood watch type scheme during the restrictions. The club must carry some generalised public liability cover for their moorings and pontoons, which would cover any possible incidents. I know we have £3m public liability cover for activities, which is the minimum the estate which rents us our land insists on, and that covers all sorts of activities including regattas and beach BBQs.
I have a feeling that there may be a repeat of the “insurance says we can’t“ mantra without anyone actually going off and looking at the policy or talking to the broker and asking what the art of the possible is.
