So you would be quite happy to risk the lives of your crew for chasing a few away by simple means that would not hurt them in any way other than possibly frighten them for a bit?
Personally, If I thought I was so threatened & would fire explosive harpoons into them ( if I had such things) & worry about the ethics afterwards (If at all)

The problem is solved by not going to the area.
Sail right outside the area of operation.
Is that really practical for a smaller yacht trying to transit N or S to a schedule with weather restraints & possibly a timetable?
Particularly, when one does not know with any real degree of accuracy where the Orcas might be tracking & at what point one could cross that track. Then there is a consideration of safety. Does one stay inshore & near to rescue services, or offshore further from aid.
I have never sailed the area & not likely to. But I understood ( possibly wrongly) that one stood offshore 100 miles heading N & inshore heading S. Is that correct? If so then that dictates where one sails, does it not?

A solution other than death would be nice. They are an endangered species and us humans are, and have been rather unpleasant to them. Still a mystery why they are behaving like this in a particular area , my guess would be they feel threatened or feel they must protect their young. They are hardly misplaced rabbits or cane toads.

I have watched lots of youtube videos in water parks where in fairly recent times, they have turned on their trainers. Hardly surprising when you discover how they are penned up for most of the day and night.

It would be nice if more time is given to try and find scaring tactics. Otherwise if they are slaughtered how many is enough ? and when do you stop ?

At the momment here in Galicia a group of thirty people including vets and fishermen are trying ti trap a Dolphin in a net so they can extract a harpoon ithas in its side, probably people wouldn’t like to see Orcas killed.Yachtsmen would get a bad press killing Orcaswithout just cause.

Interesting that the RTW racing yachtsmen seem to take the wildlife as and when it comes.

Yes. We don't have the greatest press already . It would be difficult to defend culling if driven by rich yotties. It would of course be a lot different if the orcas started to take swimmers and paddle boarders near beaches.

I do not advocate a cruel end for these rogue pests. But they are a threat to humans. I've sailed that area a lot. As are many people right now. They are potential killers on the loose and I most certainly put the welfare of my crews far far higher than a bunch of angry protein. Get rid. In my opinion.
Maybe . But how would it be done and who would do it ?

Some body or form of government would have to make the decision. Most don't go looking for these kinds of decisions. Groups would probably be out there too possibly and filming the events . Difficult to see how the TV and press would play it too. I think they need to up the resources and speed things up to find ways of scaring them away.

Norway and Japan have the resources, knowledge and market. Not boo but bang.

Tell us, where do the tens of thousands of boats based between Gib and Brittany go sailing to be outside the area? This problem isn't just about a few passing cruisers who have been attacked.

The authorities have said no to a Cull. People not sure if reverse works. Not sure if fireworks are legal.
So at the moment anyone not from the area is better staying away.
I have no idea if the locals have contacted any of the authorities in the area to do with this.

Are you serious? All the national authorities are aware of the situation to the extent when we were out and about off the Algarve this summer, the coastal VHF weather and nav warnings broadcast included lat & long where Orcas were active.
