Recently watched a rigger doing some mast work. He had stainless seizing wire 1mm. Any suggestions what or where I search for this on the web? There are no decent chandlers near where I live.

It is probably Monel, not stainless, made by Ormiston. Google Monel seizing wire and you will get plenty of mail order suppliers. Expensive stuff but a reel lasts a long time!

Never lasted that long on Kindred Spirit - lots and lots of shackles to mouse every spring when we re-rigged the mast :)

In a pinch you can also use a strand unwound from smallish 1x19 stainless rigging. On Stavros all the mousing wire is unwound from old wire rope, which is all galvanised rather than stainless - the first time we rigged KS I had forgotten to get any monel wire so I used the same technique and it worked fine. The proper stuff is better though, more flexible.

I wonder whether small zip ties aren't almost as good? I appreciate they may be susceptible to abrasion but in reality rarely notice they have been abraded - the plastic is pretty tough stuff.

The problem isn't so much abrasion, but UV.

That said, they'd definitely have been fine for a year at a time on Kindred Spirit's mast.

Supposedly the black ones are more resistant than the white / clear.
