Hi all,
I'm recommisioning my old Seagull and although I've got it running the water pump is not working and I can't remember where it is !
Anybody know how to get at it?
Also gearbox oil - I have some ep140 which I think is correct, do I just stand the Seagull upright to get the level correct?
TIA Dion

A useful contact for you might be John Williams at "Saving Old Seagulls" based in Tillingham, Essex - tel: +44 (0)1621 778859 or mobile: 0850 286607. He offers servicing and new or secondhand spares for Seagulls.

He also offered me some good advise and for £10 will send you a manual with exploded diagrams etc. (NB: He'll ask you for your engine number).

Ref the Oil :- I have the same motor, and that's what I did.

Neil.

The water impeller is just above the gearbox unit. You have to undo the three vertical screws holding the top cover. The impellor is just above this half joint gasket and is driven by the main square section drive shaft to the gearbox going through the impellor.

The water is delivered to the engine block via a quarter inch copper pipe running from this top cover up inside the exhaust pipe.

It is not a problem to have no flow from the engine tell tale at tick over, but once revs are increased you should see water flow. Do not run for long with no visible flow!
The gearbox oil should be EP80 topped to the level of the filler plug.

I have only recently done all this on my own 40plus .

Good luck.

I was advised that ep140 was in accordance with manufacturers specifications, and that enything less would be too thin and leak from the prop shaft bearing to which there is only an external "dust seal" rather than an oil seal.

I filled mine with fresh EP140 and it still drips occasionally when stood on it's stand for any considerable time. But then it's a seagull :)

My 1967 Seagull 40 Plus has always been flushed out at the end of the season in my dustbin - rubber 18 inch diameter by 23 inches tall. A brick in the bottom to support the leg keeps the prop clear of the bottom. Provided the water level is high enough, the water always circulates at a little over tickover.
