Ive heard that the length of the coax is critical between the sender and display unit, does anyone know this measurement and what rating coax should be used ?

Yes,the coaxial length is fairly critical.this is because the transducer is tuned to the output stage of the sender,you can take the unit to a competent person and with the use of test equipment can tune it for you.But try it ,see if you get a reading or response it may be ok.
