Seacocks. Close em or leave em open?

Re: ooer - insurance

I have used St Margarets for many years but I have just checked my policy and it appears to have changed and just imposes a general duty of care. In some cases this may be worse as "duty of care" is open to endless argument and interpretation.

I decided to check with Bishop Skinner whether indeed my boat would be covered if it sunk as a result of one of the seacocks being left open. After a period of silence during which I presume the underwriter was having a heart attack and, having assured him this was only a hypothetical question, he told me the following:
The underwriters would take a 'dim view' of any claim resulting from such circumstances (by which I guess he means they would resist the claim) except, apparently, if the claim resulted from one of the ENGINE raw water intake seacocks being left open
So, there you have it. Close all the seacocks except the engine ones or risk your boat
