Satellite tv

We never use ours now , as using all steaming now ,does anyone use them ,if not have you removed it skipped it.
Satellite TV is one form of technology that I have avoided and thankfully it now seems to be redundant.
At home we plugged a Chromecast into our non smart TV and that's made it a smart TV.

Just on a cruise round the Med and discovered that Sky Go will no longer work on my IPad even though I have Surfshark loaded. Apparently this is because I’m using my mobile as a Wi-Fi source and Sky can now recognise this mobile data and block it. Frustrating as it was fine last year when we travelled to the Netherlands.

There must be people in Spain who load fire sticks like they do in the uk , not that I would buy one.

If you are in the UK with a British bought Firestick, all you need to do is install all the British TV apps you want (iplayer, ITVX etc) then when you are abroad change the DNS settings on your wifi connection to use the ones supplied by Smart DNS. After that the Firestick appears to be in the UK. Smart DNS redirects the address lookup. A VPN like Surfshark redirects all the traffic and is easy for the streaming services to block (and as I mentioned before Surfshark is crap). Some streaming services make more effort to block VPNs than others.

There is a 14 day free trial with Smartdnsproxy.

I find Sky to be a bit of a rip-off and if it weren’t for the fact that we follow F1 we would ditch it. I find it particularly frustrating that they do stuff like you describe when the whole point of having SkyGo is that you want to watch it wherever you are. I presume that it is the fact that you were in the Netherlands that was the reason it was blocked as opposed to because it being used via mobile data?

No we were in the Netherlands last summer and all was well. Just returned from a trip round the Med on QM2 and Sky Go wouldn’t connect even with SurfShark, after googling a bit it seems to be because I was using my mobile as a hotspot rather than the ships (exorbitant) Wi-Fi.

Arrived on the boat in Spain earlier today.
I've been setting up computers etc so I thought I would give Surfshark a try.
Using the Surfshark Firefox addon, it works a treat.
BBCiPlayer faultless.
The actual internet connection is Lobster 4G - local Spainish connection.

Try Surfshark with some services that actually do try and stop you watching abroad and see how faultless Surfshark really is and how long before it stops working.

For free TV, I can recommend these various programmes (I like crime/thriller stuff)

https://www.itv.com/watch/unforgotten/2a3372

https://www.itv.com/watch/code-of-a-killer/2a3242

https://www.channel5.com/show/killer-storm-the-fastnet-disaster

https://www.channel5.com/show/heatwave-summer-of-76

https://www.channel5.com/show/cause-of-death/

I've got Netflix, Amazon Prime & Apple TV+ subscriptions but most of my enjoyable viewing is on the free catch up channels. The money saved by not having a TV licence goes towards my other subscriptions (although Apple is free with Barclays).

Out in Spain at the moment.
The location of our marina has 5G available so I thought I would do some tests.
Using BroadbandSpeedChecker that you can find on a Google search.
This site Broadband Speed Checker

First an iPhone with only 4G - about 9Mbs - download
Any device connected to a 4G router with MIMO technology - about 18Mbs - download
5G using my Samsung S23 - 180Mbs - download

So you can see that 5G is significantly faster that 4G
Also, using a router increases the performance.

Ok so I was thinking I am in the Carib and watching bbc on ships TV, so what do they get signal from

I have downloaded smart DNS and tried it on BBC and ITV and it failed to open either so assume this is now a non starter for using these in the Med?

See my post #50 - Surfshark works.
What device are you using?
For Smart DNS, I suspect that you haven't set it up properly.
Have a look at Grubble's post #46
He points out that Smart DNS only redirects the DNS requests whereas VPN's in general (like Surfshark) redirect all the traffic.
I've never used Smart DNS but it seems to me that it should work.
As I say, Surfshark DOES work.

I use a number of VPNs - NordVPN, Surfshark and PIA.
I also have my own private VPN service back to my home in the UK - I don't use that for streaming because my home broadband isn't fast enough (yet).
I suggest Surfshark running on a PC with the Firefox addon would be the easiest way to set something up.
