I live about 50 Km south of Rome in Italy. I can get Sky with some difficulty using a 1m dish and a better quality LNB. The problem in southern Europe is with the Astra northerly beam, which puts Rome on the beam edge. You can see footprints of the beams by visiting the Astra web site.

I cannot get ITV and only get the Sky "service" channel (menus e.t.c.) at certain times of the day. However, once the receiver has been locked getting most of the Sky channels is not a problem (including BBC1, 2, 3, 4, 5) and radio channels.
In southern Spain you should be OK with an 85cm dish - however if size is not important (as they say) then go for a bigger dish and you should be OK even in rain storms.
Hi Kevin
Ive got a small place South of Estepona Spain I use a 1.2 m dish with a panasonic digital sat system with a free to view card. With this set up I can get BBC1/2 itv1 C4 C5 and approx 20 other channels including news channels.
But wait..... BBC is to change Satellite to Astra 2D with a narrower footprint which may change things.
A good site to check out is http://www.satcure-focus.com/auto.htm
Explains lots about sat sytems in plain English.
Thanks for the imput, will check it out. Hoping to have a dish smaller than 1m due to space conditions. By the way I am based in Almerimar for the moment.
Cheers Kevin
