Any recommendations on this? briefly looked at Intellion range, pricey but is it worth it? Any experience of these or others?

If you only want to use it in port or at anchor, then save yourself a packet by going for a model that tracks in 2D not 3D. The KVH model is the M2, but i'm sure other manufacturers also do one. People generally seem happy with KVH and Raymarine, so no need to pay extra for Intellian if they are more expensive.

Wow you mean to say you've still got some money left :) Was thinking of one for Marmite but to be honest the factory fit digital antenna has always worked really well, and as we don't watch that much telly can't justify the extra cost, and you might find with the new boat that you don't want/need to spend much time down below.

Surely for UK use its a bit OTT - don't you just like to get away from it all. if you must watch TV freeview (even freeview HD if you must) surely satisfies most weekend cravings??

Don't listen to the critics, having decent TV on board is as important as anything else.

Last weekend, early in the morning, feet up on the sette, watching the rugby, I was a happy bunny.

Had I not been able to get TV or the signal was intermittent I would have missed the match and that in turn would have spolit my weekend.

How basic should we make our boats to keep the purists happy? take out the carpets, heating, lights, move the beds out? real men sleep on rope! Arrh!

KVH everytime. We sell land based satellite systems and the non existent failiure rate and excellent back up from KVH puts them head and shoulders in front of the competition in land based systems.

I have the M3 which will work underway, I don't really need it to be honest, but did use it two weekends ago, again rugby I am afraid. Poodling along with my wife at the helm on the flybridge in the sun, crossing from Poole to Cowes to meet mates I showered and shaved and had the TV on in our cabin whilst underway.

I admit I don't actually need it, but there again I don't really need a boat, I just want one and I don't like compromise and I hate things that don't work properly

I specced them (£sixteen grandishly, eek) on current boat only becuase it's awkward at re-sale if you don't have this on my model of boat but I think they're a waste of time. I hate TV but even if I were a TV adict I'd hardly use them. I've actually used mine for about 2 hours total TV in a whole season and 3000nm of crusing, just to catch the news which I can get on the internet anyway. There is so much more to do on a boat than watch TV. I have a KVH M7 dome/dish which is a pretty big monster and it still doesn't get a great picture; the picture pixelates a bit now and again. So I'd say, only get them if you absolutely love TV on the move and can't do without, or if you have a massive boat-accessory budget

If you are going to do it try to get a 40cm not 37cm dish, and I think Raymarine gear is actually made for them by intellian and rebranded raymarine (happy to stand corrected on that if others know better). I'd get kvh - market leader for sure. They are at least very easy to install diy if you decide to go ahead.

Hi john, im surprised you dont get a great picture, has the skew angle been reset since it left Oundle? that could be the problem as it will be different due to the curvature of the earth, it will give the correct angle when you switch the box on, its about 12.5 from memory if fitted in the uk on the ones ive fitted here KVH M3s.
 
Have had kvh on previous boat, very good but only single lnb so only one sky box, now have raymarine with twin lnb, just as good as kvh but now the kids get one box & we get our own. So much better when staying away on the boat for extended periods. All you need then is four laptops, various games consoles, several I phones, an electric guitar or two plus amp, & your nearly ready.:D
 
I have had both the Raymarine (rebranded Intellilan) and the KVH. The KVH works very well but you have to manually adjust the LNB. Most important thing is where you mount unit as we found when we went to Beaucette this summer. The mast was in the way so we couldn't get a signal - the boat next door did. Worth having without question and when the digital switchover happens it will be harder to get a good picture with the boat moving.
 
I have the Intellian i2 fitted to our 32ft boat great picture every time.
The definition of luxury is watching ''Andrew Mare'' at low tide, ha ha.

Having the option to hand would be nice. Not sure if it's over the top or not or just plain uneccessary which is why i'm asking the question. We intend to spend as much time as we possibly can onboard and we enjoy relaxing infront of the box of an evening so whether its in the marina or further afield, we need something that will do the job well.
Just a thought at this stage.

lol Neil...not much left no :( but we love to chill watching a bit of tele but if the factory fit is more than adequate, then we'll stick to that...possibly :rolleyes:.

Ours are Raymarine which are rebadged Intellian.
And they are superb.
Auto LNB skew so no adjusting.
Picks up signals when KVH systems on the adjacent boat cant.

I recently helped a friend commision a small Raymarine installation that he had put together himself.
It just worked - no hassle.

Raymarine/intellian are good.

We could pick up all Sky channels reliably on our 37 cm KVH M3 in the UK. They are sold as being equivalent signal strength to previous 45 cm dishes. I think OP's boat is 40 feet, so smaller dish would suit better.
 
I have'nt been able to sort out the intellian antenna on Blue Angel yet,
actually I didn'd miss it for a second, but it would please swmbo...
perhaps somebody on here can put me on track to setup the menu etc... when I'm at the boat again ?

during our summer trip, one of the guests / friends wanted me to switch on the generator all day, just for him to watch the "the office" DVD's
I hated him for that :)

the TV in the bedroom is completely useless for me, other things to do there ao sleeping.
 
I understand why some people don't get why anyone would want to watch tv whilst boating but rightly or wrongly, there's nothing we love more than being able to combine the two. We like to make it as much of a home from home as our budget will get us. We spend as much time as possible on the boat and if it's a big sporting weekend then so much the better. There's nothing more annoying than a crackling, freezing digital picture when someones genni kicks in or the fridge boosting its thermostat especially when Jonny's about to drop kick the winner!:rolleyes:. We will have the tv on most of the time whether watching or just on in the background...each to their own i guess. Thanks for all your advice/comments. Interesting that Intellion make them for Raymarine (have i got that right?) so I will look at both of those and KVH. Thanks again all.

Horses for courses, I suspect that people that live a little further afield from their boats may just enjoy more creature comforts.

We finish work on a Friday night and most weekends head down to Poole where we keep our boat. Often we go down with no real intention to take her out, as the weather forecast looks ****.

So weekends like that, our boat becomes a "floating caravan" but a very comfortable one floating in a most fantastic location.

I know I sell KVH equipment so am biased, but given that I have had to give up trying to sort out Raymarine warranty issues on some of my equipment, I couldn't find it in me to turn my back on a system that is designed, manufactured, distributed and warrantied by the manufacturer.

The autosqew ability of the Raymarine is no use to me as I tend to go a 100 miles or so West or East of Poole so do not need to adjust it. Going much further a field is unlikely to happen as we have two big hairy German Sheperds so France for example is not an option for us

We have a 37cm raymarine set up which both works well & IMO looks good with the dummy dome on the other side for balance.
