Thinking about where to take the boat next, feel like Spain box has been ticked now. Quite fancy a season in Sardinia and then on to mainland Italy the following year. Any suggestions?

Portus Karalis is a good place for a winter berth, flights to and from Cagliari are easy and the marina is smack in the centre of town with all the amenities that go with it. Quite a few people winter there but don't normally stay, just visit for long weekends etc.

If you looking for winter berth with so me kind of liveaboard community then you looking at Caglian ,
marina de sole I think is where most head for although many now just cruise Sardinia and head for Sicily forb the winter as its much cheaper and many more liveaboard .
Plus the weather better.
On the east coast there a really nice little marina , St Maria Navarrese , we pop in to get hauled out after a sail drive leak found it very resealable price for Sardinia ,
So if your not worry about a community that's a option.
As for cruising you won't have much of a problem finding good spot , the North is lovely with the Madd islands just off the coast and south of Olbia there some good anchorage, move around and you can get shelter from any winds , but it don't stop there ,
Sardinia is a great cruising ground.

Thanks very much for the replies. We are still working out when we will make the move from Denia. We are paid up until June there so may move over at that point, just need to decide where to base the boat.

Well consider one of the Sicilian south coast marina , only a overnight sail from the north coast Sicily to Sardinia , prices are good . Flight to the UK although it's quite a bus ride away and safe to leave the boats , plus both do a winter 7 month contract ,
Our this year with discount is under 1.4k for 13 mts .

There Licata marina cala de sole and MDR Ragusa ,
Both are very popular with liveaboard from all over Europe and the world .
Both are very safe , you find there lot of write up from live aboard saying one better then the other but the fact is there both good both offer six month winter contract and if you a member of some of the club you get an extra month free .
We had three winters in MDR and this will be our four in Licata .
Re book for the following winter normally comes with a good discount ,
Which is why many go back year after year , so you need to book early especially for Licata .
There a couple of up and down side to both
Ragusa as a more of a small sea side town although thing like super market the town Sq with a few bars are about 10 mins walk but mostly along the beach tho there is a back street way to it ,
It also have a fresh water spring so you end up leaving with what ever fouling you arrive with .
Licata is in an old Sicilian large town , the big super market is just on the edge of the marina .
there many more super market in the town , chandlers in the marina and one at the old fishing harbour.
The down side , it does have a bad fouling problem ,
cause by the fish farm on the other harbour , so depending on your AF ,
you are lightly to have to employ the diver in the spring to clean the bottom or do as we do go out and anchor and clean it our self .
That's basically it , if you should become interested in any of the two and have any question just ask,

Thanks again. One quick question, whats the main reason for going south coast vs north coast (just thinking being nearer to Palermo airport would be a big positive for us of north coast). Marina berthing costs I assume?

There a few reason , for a start , even though Sicily isn't that big there a different in winter weather from North and south , its normally warmer and the south dont get the northern gales as much as the North coast .
For liveaboard who staying all or most of the winter , they looking for some kind of community and both south coast marinas have them .
On the North Coast Cap Orlando marina open a few years back and tried to encourage the liveaboard with a huge discount and some did take it up , we know several people but they all say the snatching on the ropes when there a storm is bad with ropes breaking plus its a very long walk to the nearest town over a mile and a bit, although the marina do have a few bikes people could use,
top that with the bars in the marina to get a drink charges stupid money , no happy hour lol ,
So them who try it ended up moving back to the south marinas although last year there was a couple who left their boots there .
Palermo has several marina but no liveaboard , for thos lonest who don't want a community or if your just lleaving the boats it OK,
more expensive and another old Sicilian town like Licata .
Bus to the airport from both marinas on the south cost aren't a problem ,
licata as a bus from the town about a 2 hours ride Catania ,
Ragusa you have to take a bus to Ragusa city , then a bus to the airport from there,
There also a small closer airport , comiso very close to Ragusa but its a summer airport where you can get flights to the UK and other parts of the EU.

As an aside any issues with Denia for sailing boat marina ? Curious as I thought it might be a suitable retirement location ?
I have only sailed north Sardinia (lovely bays and anchorage’s towards Corsica but airport distances/ prices and carriers might a consideration -I seem to recall Mr Slezzyjet was my airline even if not one of choice.

In that case Palermo could be an option , all I say is over winter with liveaboard there alway someone to keep an eye on the boat .
I can't tell you how many times we had to sort out ropes , furl on sails and even once brake into a boat that was taken on water and pump it out.

We love Denia, we are in El Portet and have zero complaints, I'd really recommend it, lovely marina and town. We always planned to slowly move the boat around the Med and while we love Spain we fancy a change and Italy is the direction we want to travel.
