Sandy Anchorage - Where?

HW just above "Clamp House" same side of the Orwell

Buxey Sands, just on the north side, but be aware that it doesn't take spin.

At high tide there are a couple more spots on the Orwell. Opposite Woolverstone there is some sand at HW, we used to take our kids across for a BBQ on an evening HW years ago. Another spot is under the woods opposite Clamp House, again fairly sandy at HW.

On the Stour at Wrabness there is a bit of a beach at HW. It is pretty steep to there, and there are usually moorings to pick up for a lunch stop.

River Colne, starboard side as you are coming in. It is known locally as Second Beach, and whilst not sheltered from anything out of the West, you have good holding ground. Only down side is that the area is owned by Essex Naturalists Trust, and going ashore is somewhat restricted...unless you are a member of course!!

My favourite is Iken Cliff, at the top of the Alde, but I have to say it is less sandy than it was 30 years ago when i was first taken there...

Waldringfield itself is a good bet if you are happy to pay to moor rather than anchor. The beach might not look much but you should see how many happy young children you can fit on it on a sunny summer weekend!

There are a lot of HW beaches on the Orwell & Stour (we had a nice picnic at Harksted this sumer), but unless you count sitting high and dry on the mud as an anchorage these might not be the answer to your question! In a smilar vein the picnic beach of choice at Aldeburgh YC is at 'Little Japan' but i would not call that an anchorage either.

Walberswick is a lovely beach that is 5 or 10 minutes walk from a berth in the Blyth.

Some lovely HW suggestions, any all tide locations? I'd settle for a bit of shingle mixed in!

Stone Point is probably the best all-round landing and the nearest thing to a West Country beach. Osea island is of course, stony, but a pleasant place mid-week.

The Rocks can usually be landed at all tides but there isn't as much sand there as when I took this in '95 and I don't know if it is still possible to look for fossils:

We found the beach on the opposite side to the Backwaters entrance even better. Dylan based one of his videos here when he dried out for a tide, but as Dylan says, there is the odd nudist lurking in the bushes!

The beach at Bradwell between the power station and the chapel is can be pleasant too, you look over towards Mersea Island so don't need to view the building behind.
