A new ferry service started into Sami, Keffallonia yesterday. As yet, I know not from where. The locals greeted the inaugural arrival with firecrackers and flares. Result now is though that the yacht harbour is now almost permanently polluted by half burned LBO fumes from either 2 or 3 ferries now moored here overnight and the narrow streets are now back to being choked with very large trucks several times a day. I can taste the fumes in the back of my throat now!

That is a completely stupid statement to make, but why let the facts get in the way of a story!
The Sami/Piso aeseo/Patra ferry stopped running two years ago, it caused great hardship to locals, a lot worked in Patra hospitals, their day started on the 8.30am ferry and ended on the 11pm return, a long day!
The alternative was to travel to Poros, catch the Killini ferry, the drive another 1.5 hours to Patra. Tenders for the ferry were submitted but refused because the operators wanted to cherry pick the route by only operating in the high season. The local authorities only wanted an operator who would provide an all year service, now they have one, Poros ferry operator tried to block this claiming unfair competition, but failed. All this has caused huge anger amongst the locals over the last two years. Personally I am pleased to see it run, it means locals can visit some of the excellent Patra hospitals for treatment.
This ferry will NOT cost EU tax payers!

If it won't cost EU tax payers, I presume it's operating with out subsidies? If it's getting a subsidy from the government, then just now, it's EU/IMF/ECB money that's underpinning the subsidy.

Eu? Not your money, ask Cameron. Ecb is no Bank of England. You might maybe claim your share of Imf funding, but so could someone from Angola or Kazakhstan.
Enjoy Greek tavernas
(and ferries)

I think I witnessed some retaliatory obstruction the other night then as the Pelagos ferry was prevented from docking by the ZF "Dancing about" in his path for over half an hour when he could have easily and rapidly exited the port.
