Saltire as ensign

why not observe the old traditions and do the right thing?

Because the boat's registered home port is in Scotland and I'd rather fly a Scottish national flag.

Surprised to see that this thread has been resurrected, but for info Fairwinds has flown a Saltire from the stern for the last two seasons. Fortunately no naval vessel has ever signalled me, as I don't even know if I still have a red duster on board.

The alternative is the Scottish red ensign

I have a small Shetland flag and a Saltire at my spreaders, and another lovely Saltire at the stern. Just for this year Ive also got a massive YES Scotland Saltire flying from a specially made Ensign staff thats 6ft long and strapped to the stern. Looks amazing!

Other boats here have Saltires or Scottish Naval Ensigns. Not one proper ensign or UJ to be seen locally!

Here is my normal attire...

I've raced to France a million times and we never put an ensign up when we arrived. Nor did anyone else. Are you sure there's a fine? How much?

I kept my GBR registered boat in France for over 2 years, never had an ensign up ever and never had any problems. But then I was never stopped by the douaniers.

That looks great Even Chance. I know I promised not to let this be a political thread but these are very exciting times. I must get myself a YES flag, and a Saltire. Then, if the rain ever stops, I'll go out sailing with them.

Racers don't fly an ensign when racing but should when they enter a foreign port. The Douanes are careful not to bother racers because the local authority regards the arrival of a racing fleet as a huge boost to the local economy. It doesn't mean that the locals don't notice your lack of courtesy; they do and just think you're a load of ignorant ******.

To be honest, We would love the support of our Southern neighbours! Nice one!

The Yes campaign seems to have the support of every English person I've discussed it with.
You have our best wishes, good luck with your independence. We are also looking forward to our independence from Scotland so that we can manage our own affairs without the interference of Scottish MPs.

I have passed this comment before that Calmac ferries whilst flying the official ensign at the highest point the saltire they fly often at the bowi s always far bigger.

OK, I should have asked this years ago, but to honest am barely interested in the subject.
What is the deal with a blue ensign? Can't I hang any old tablecloth off the back of my boat... it's my boat after all...

Of course you can. Outside the odd fringe areas like norniron and parts of scotland, no one could care a damn what you hang from the back of your boat except for some crusty old pedants in blazers and pink trousers.

Outside the odd fringe areas like norniron and parts of scotland, no one could care a damn what you hang from the back of your boat because most of them are people who, only recently, have been able to afford to buy a boat and get on the water, but who have not bothered to learn about or respect the nautical traditions that have developed over the past couple of hundred years.
Corrected that for you.

Flag etiquette for yachts didn't develop over hundreds of years. It's a.game, invented in the first half of the 20th century to give posh people in yacht clubs something to worry about and to enable them to distinguish good cheps from fearful oiks. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but none of the rest of us are obliged to play their game. Sardonic laughter is a perfectly respectable response.

I doubt it's down to individual skippers, but most seem to work that way. Good compromise I reckon?
