Seems to be becoming more difficult to get reasonable pub meals here. Last Saturday we got to the Fortescue at 5.30 only to find all tables in the restauant area and also the room to the right of the bar all reserved. Managed to grab the only table in the bar area and nurse our drinks until they started serving food at 7.00 pm. No great hardship but it was fortunate that we were there early. I know it was still August but we've had problems earlier in the season.
The Victoria appears to be trying to move upmarket and no longer serves bar meals after 7.00 pm. The King's Head opposite has changed but still serves meals in a cafe style (i.e. non pubby) annexe at the rear. Upstairs (maybe separate from the pub) there seems to be a club selling tapas and similar snacks at rather inflated prices.
The old Shipwright's Arms although still sporting a pub sign with that name has become a gift shop! I know Salcombe's trade must be seasonal but I'm surprised that it can't support another pub.
Finally, the Ferry Boat has great views but I have never rated the food. OK for a lunchtime pint and sandwich but last time we ate there in the evening I seem to remember being in a rather featureless (and bar-less) room on the top floor.
Not a pub, but Captain Flints cafe/restaurant always seems to have queues outside - does this mean it's good or is it a reflection of the lack of pubby places to eat?
Seems to me that Salcombe is well provided with Yuppie (is that expression still in vogue?) restaurants and bistros but needs more decent pubs. Are there any others tucked away that I've not yet found?
Thoughts and suggestions welcomed.
