Have you sometimes received that small xmas gift from a member of the family who thinks they are doing you a real favour by buying something that really is useless for your needs and a waste of their money.

If you were in the position of advising loved ones and friends, of things that you would really like and that would be really useful for your sailing, from a few pence to a maximum of £40 .... what would be on your list for yourself and also as a recommendation to others?

Card from someone you have to be nice to:

Dear Scotty, I lost your wish list, know you like boats though so got you a subscription to Motor Boats Monthly. Hope you enjoy it. Happy Christmas!!

Unwanted nautical gifts I have received:
- an inclinometer
- a cheap peaked hat labelled "Skipper"
- a guide to marinas in the Med [for superyachts]
- a year's subscription to Yachting World

Gifts I would like? Can't think of anything - I'm reaching that time of life when I want to get rid of 'stuff', not collect more.:D

Tilley Hat.... the Bees Knees!

Might have to twist Santa's arm for a few more pennies, but it would have to be a proper Tilley hat[/QUO

Tilley hat.... got one of those this spring, one with the enormous brim, Excellent!... had to get from the U.S. as U.K. dealers don't seem to stock that type. Keeps all bits neck up out of the sun and has excellent chin and neck cord to prevent losing in a gale.
Insured against loss for 1st year 50% of value, has a small security pocket inside and a security system to hold specs or sunnies. Guaranteed unshrinkable.....generally the bees knees, but as you say a bit over the £40 mark.
Downside ...... you will look a nurd.... but who cares!
