I never wear rings, watches or chains while sailing or working with machinery or electricity. It was drummed into me at an early age as an engineering apprentice. Likewise SWMBO who also has an 'engineering' style job doesn't wear jewelery while sailing or at work.
My father nearly lost a finger while wearing a ring at work, he was lucky it just severed the tendons!

Have never worn a wedding ring, I started my work life in farming and met several people who were missing their ring finger after getting their ring caught in mechanical equipment usual the PTO on a tractor. Plenty of opportunities for the same sort of thing to happen while sailing and I bet it would really sting
