It's a long time since I have had any dealing with a sailing schools. Does anyone have recommendations or experience of sailing schools to do a day skipper practical course - probably in the Solent.

I take 20+ uni students for comp crew every year with Promethous / Sunsail Portsmouth. They have been excellent. Happy to recommend.

My son did a combined Day Skipper theory followed by practical course with Commodore Yachting in Gosport over Easter this year, and was impressed.

Here at Haslar there seem to be a number- I guess it might be worth looking at boats various schools have in terms of age etc. some schools seem to have somewhat elderly craft even if maintained. Would you be inviting the instructor on your own boat?

Back in the day Southern Sailing has one of the best reputations - they were well known for sailing older boats and the quality of the food on their courses. I wouldn't have hesitated to go to them had they still been operating.

BOSS also had a good reputation - and I see they are still going strong.

I have considered own boat for him but with prices seem to be about £300 per day which is twice the cost of a 5 day course on a sailing school boat. But recommendations in that area would also be very welcome

I've done a variety of courses with a few sailing schools. I feel at the bigger ones a lot of the quality of tuition depends on the instructor you get. I've always been lucky though.

Out of all - the one I'd highly recommend was Broad Reach sailing out of Gosport. Small school with just the one boat, very well maintained and was highly impressed by the tuition delivered by Simon King (who owns the school, and is also a RYA examiner).

The contrast I had with other schools was that he was obviously genuinely passionate and interested in both sailing and teaching (often you get the former but not the latter!). The food was also excellent.
