Sailing Mature moments

Yes! I remember once....uh....uh.....something happened, it'll come back to me! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Too young myself but an elderly relative had a habit of falling down the hatch while fitting the mainsail cover. In the end he decided to keep the whisky bottle and foghorn handy at the bottom of the companionway steps.

""I realised I'd been wearing my slippers on deck all day."

Tee hee!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Well, we always sail in the old type, zip up front slippers, especially on the longer passages! Fantastic grip, easy to get on and off and very warm. No probs if they get wet, just rinse 'em in fresh water and dry 'em out.

Our current pairs have now covered over 20k miles and are beginning to show signs of wear. Might take 'em back and complain I think, after all they cost a huge £1.45 a pair in Algeciras a few years ago!

Re: Sailing - those \'forgotten\' moments

After slipping and heading down the harbour I can detour past the house - well almost, tho I wouldn't choose to land on the beach. I was thinking rather of a basket on Eastoke Beacon with a pulley system so that SWMBO could deposit items for collection: sarnies, mobile phone, scotch, gloves, shirt & tie - you know the sort of thing.

Not that there would be much call for it of course.

Dementia Rools OK!

Re: Sailing - those \'forgotten\' moments

Reversing out of a berth one fine morning the boat suddenly comes to a halt, gives her a bit of stick and nothing - could not figure out what was wrong as the bow line and stern line were on deck and the springer was lying below the spray hood. I thought I had run aground in the berth. Suddenly remembered I had put a second bow line out the night before as it was a wee bit windy. At least I remembered to turn on the diesel....... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Our sailing chums and us keep a logbook of all such moments, [when we can remember them], after 7 years there are hundreds ranging from things like mistaking a building on land for a ferry, leaving various items in bars etc inc wallets, jackets....
However, we're not alone...we have evidence that charter/flotilla firms employ like minded people. TWICE in 3 years we booked 3 yachts for 3 couples from a well known orange coloured firm operating out of Brighton, only to find they'd only remembered to supply 1 yacht!!! Also, we surprised one of their lead crews some years ago on a flotilla holiday by arriving unannounced as they were operating on the wrong channel. I've hundreds more examples but can't remember where the book is.

Think my most embarassing was when I mistook the village on top of Portland for a cruise liner! I was singlehanding from Torquay back to Southampton and crossing Lyme Bay on a dark moonless night I became convinced the lights were a cruise liner approaching me, even trickier when I put on the radar, saw nothing and concluded that they probably had stealth mode switched on. Doh!

Who made you embarassed?

Oh yes………….

A world of hanking jibs on upside down. Forgetting which side of the river you are on. Passing buoys the wrong side in shallow water. And as Charles Stock used to say, the cocks up’s tend to get more intricate. …..

Thank god for understanding fellow yotties and insurance companies.

Then there was the time we used the leading marks (the hotel conservatory) in the sound of Iona, ( as per the cruising club directions), and one drove away........ I assume it was full of people like me who don't have to pay anymore.
