Sailing from the midlands

Nightmare scenario....... A mate is having to relocate due work commitments to Derby. Could not get further away from the sea! Where do people sail? What's the nearest place to relocate the boat?

Thanks for any positive advice....

The nearest place is probably Fosdyke or Wisbech, both quite a way inland. Grimsby has a decent yacht club and marina, sailing in the Humber is quite sheltered (sometimes).

That's probably why quite a lots of folk keep boats up here but use them less. You can get a marina berth for between £2-3k at the new marina in Greenoch and use your boat for longer periods less often. When I lived in Lichfield I found I could do Glasgow in about 5 hours. With the new M74 extension you could probably do Derby to Greenoch in that then step on board. The Clyde is not very tidal so you don't have that level of planning - its just turn up and sail, weather permitting.

Not for everyone but another option that many take.

The beauty of the Midlands is that everywhere is equidistant so you can pick & choose & move around.

I'm near Stafford & had a boat on the Wirral, where we used to live, but that was daft. Moved to Conway then had a few seasons on the Clyde before selling near Oban & buying on the Straits, back to Conway & then to Caernarfon (cheaper & better mooring but 30 mins further away)

You can't nip off for a jolly on an evening tide - but plenty of places are within a few hours drive at the weekend.
