Does any one have any info on improving the sail ability of a lugger or am i expecting to much . I have a Heard Tosher with a main and mizzen and it really does not point very well at all , i reckon best to be 60-65 degrees anything off the wind is fine

If its a standing lug it needs a powerful tack downhaul and it needs close attention, any slack here and creases run across the sail & it wont point or drive.

all i have is a yard with the sail laced on and a hook on the tack to the bow and a sheet that runs back towards the stern but the only block i have is on the haliyard down haul to us as a stay on the windward side of the sail

Send me your email address and I'll put you in contact with mates who sail and renovate Cornish Luggers (44 footers)

It would appear that you have a dipping lug main sail which requires setting on the leeward side of the mast for each tack. In large fishing vessels these were known as widow makers but also had a reputation as powerful windward sails. Is your problem the windward ability of the sail or the leeward slip of the hull?

You want to PM "Seanick" of this forum who owns Ocean Pearl. He'll know.
