Sail Cleaning

Any recommendation for good and well priced sail cleaning/ valeting place ?
South or east coast....

Many chandlers ( and sailmakers) in the solent area and further afield send them to TipTop sail laundry in Portsmouth They only deal through their "trade partners " and not direct with individuals

As Vic says, most on the South Coast use Tiptop so it's just a question of asking around to see which of the collection points (chandlers, boatyards , sailmakers etc) offer the cheapest rate. When I last looked, the cheapest was Arthur's Chandlery in Gosport and the most expensive (a sailmaker) were nearly twice as much!

For what it's worth, a sail maker told me not to send sails for machine cleaning, if that's what is on offer. Soak overnight in a wheelie bin with sail wash solution, or lay out if possible and use a broom with the cleaning solution.

Took my one year old laminate jib ( ST jib on a 31ft boat )to Lonton & Gray in Burnham & they sent to a sail cleaning firm & they then fleeced me for £ 114-00
Would not have been so bad if it had been a god clean but I cannot say I was overly impressed. Needed it as the foil caused a stain near the foot over a 3 ft2 area

Thanks, I will get on and call few of those... I'm not really fancy cleaning myself if I don't have too, even if we do it, where to dry them...
Arun sail did them 3 years ago and Ivan made such a good job of it, he is retired now... So I'll try someone also..
Thanks for the few good recommendations

Be interested to know what a "sail wash solution" was ?

I think Tiptop use traditional methods. Some years ago PBO did an article featuring them and another in the Solent area, Novosail??, ( now no longer in existence) who used high tech methods, but still not a machine in the sense of a giant Zanussi

Just dropped ours off at Mussets in west mersea, who quoted £40 per sail for cleaning and was very impressed by their approach to the repairs needed. They clean by hand. Obviuosly time will tell how good the job is but they were reccomended by others who were pleased.

Unusual to be charged per sail given the vast variation in size between sails, usually I thought one was charged by weight. I have also used Arthur's with good results although if you want the stitching checked etc. you will need to use a sailmaker and will be charged extra.

Jeckles are up at Wroxham they will collect along the east coast.
The charge by the weight and will store over winter inc.

Used novo sail once and while fine for services their prices seemed rather high compared to results so maybe that explains ceasing trading but they did seem to have lots of kit so maybe someone bought it and have resurfaced using it Phoenix like?
