I am toying with the idea of night fishing tonight at anchor, apart from the standard safety checks and gear, and vv good weather is there anything I should do over and above daylight methods.

Powerful anchor light! Never mind the wattage regulations, just make sure you can be seen!

The colregs actually say you SHOULD leave as many extra lights on as possible, in addition to the anchor light.

I think I have confused myself with the difference of being at anchor, and when under way and destroying night vision, which is of little consequence in these circumstances!!! Fool that I am!!

We haul a tilley lamp up the mast as well as deck lights. Also have a pack of white mini-flares handy. In our neck of the woods the danger comes from inshore trawlers, no one at the wheel, all busy filleting their catch.!

i think it wd be an idea to consider clipping on, perhaps with a long line and harness if you are on yer own. praps put the swim ladder down too so you can get back on if fall in.

Might I suggest you do what the locals do over here.
A wee boat, I guess about 30' - 35' has just gone past us with what look like 9 2'x2' square lights all along his deck. They are very bright, it is dark over here, and at first thought it was a cruise boat until I realised it was not so far away.

The other thing is that the bright lights attrached the fish. Oh god are we going to get the anti-hunting lobby on the go again for ungentlemanly fishing.

What the hell cos it sure works for the Malaysians!!!

you do not show a location on your profile, but if you are in the Thames estuary forget the night fishing, the water is so dirty the fish don't know day from night, go for the killing times i.e. last light or first light, and leave the dark hours to the bats Even the most familiar areas are a different ball game when the daylight has gone, the best thing to take is a mate, one who suffers from sonambulism.

We have done this a few times and found the most difficult thing to spot are pot marker buoys. Not only when travelling at speed but also when fishing - getting hooked down a pot rope (especially round Jersey when the tide is running) in the dark isnt a nice experience and having something to cut the line with close at hand came in useful.
