Hi all, having finally managed to get full cylinders it seems there is now also a safety recall on these due to leaking valves. They are safe while turned off but leak gas when the valve is opened. Please see the link for info on how to check whether yours are affected. Any YBW staff reading may want to pop this in the magazine news section too as it seems like something people will want to know about :)

Thanks for the heads up, needs to be widely known as this is a popular size for boaters and caravanners.

Over the years I have had several cylinders that leaked gas from the valve stem as the valve was opened or closed. I am talking about a period back to the 1970s. The last one I noticed doing this was acquired in 2016. I mentioned it once when exchanging a cylinder in the Glasgow depot that Calor had and was told that it was due to wear on the stem and the O-ring sealing it. They were checked when refilled but was not regarded as serious as the valve should always be either fully opened or fully closed, something that I had not been aware of. When fully open the piston inside was compressed against the top, sealing off the stem. At the time it sounded sensible and certainly stopped stem leaks as tested by leak detection foam.

I'll be checking the two on Sea Hawk as soon as I can get there.

Having changed our second cylinder over to a Gaz 907 plus adapter I still need to check the (full) Calor 4.5kg one currently on line. We have been using our backup infra red plug in hob gizmo since we discovered the non-existence of exchange 4.5 kg cylinders and with the ongoing buggers muddle feel inclined to continue, although it is only one 'burner' not that we need more as we have an electric steamer set, electric George Forman grill and electric halogen oven. Our live aboard friends next door have gone to large red propane tanks mounted on the stern deck of their steel boat, they have a domestic 4 burner stove so probably a smart move on their part.

The 'GAZ' solution works with 907 cylinders that fit straight in our existing built in gas locker, but jeez they are expensive.

As someone already said this is a problem for so many it needs some high level intervention from the RYA, CA or even uncle tom cobley as there seems no interest much by Calor in sorting it out quickly otherwise. :(
