hi, I am researching into buying a sadler 290 and looking to find out its good and bad points for use in the Irish sea as well as some club racing. Any feed back/ advice from curent owners would be welcome.

Superb boat, Heavy (5 tonnes) yet fast and comfortable in a blow. Will sail well up wind in a F7. Some high speeds logged by several owners. Had mine for 4 years now and still happy with it.
Some will say that you will lose performance or windward sailing ability with bilge keels, if so this is barely noticeable on the 290. You have two bulbed lead fins in reality.
Accomodation is good.
Expensive yes, but worth it.

Easy to sail singlehanded.

Get on the waiting list now!!

Great boats. Got beaten by one in the 2006 Round Britain and Ireland race. Only beaten by about an hour but we were in a Maxi 1100! Needless to say the other two guys were better sailors, but nuff said really.
I'd love one.

Check th engine installation. I heard of one where a pipe associated with the cooling installation was not the right type. Probably one of the fresh water ones. At temp it went soft & split. Having said that the owner of said boat was a bit of a plonker & didn't know where the sea cocks were so left them shut leading to an overheat.

You might want to consider a slightly cheaper alternative to the Sadler, the RM880. Same size and twin keel and even more performance orientated. Very different design, which you'll either love or hate, but definitely worth a look. I know of someone who originally was looking at the Sadler and now will be taking delivery of a RM880 in a few months.
