What's sad to see to me is that someone dos'nt care enough about the environment to do something about it & that also includes the Queens Harbour Master Portsmouth who when I reported something like that did'nt even bother to reply.
If it was someone's 'pride' would'nt they have bothered to do something about it & then maybe it would'nt have broken loose in the first place?

I took a walk past Dolphin Quay in Emsworth yesterday to see a boat totaly swamped on its moorings. Sailing or boat ownership may have changed but still there will be folks about who would love to own a boat but just cannot afford to buy one who would dearly take on a project boat.

It belonged to a Spanish guy who borrowed various moorings and lived on the boat. It went AWOL in the winter storms whilst he was abroad.

Update on this: Over two years later & the abandoned boat is still there & adding to the detritus in Portsmouth Harbour spoiling the environment & nothing has been done about it.

So much for the benefits of being in the EU! It would seem that EU citizens can act irresponsibly in our Country & there is nothing that we can do about it.I wonder how many other situations there are in which this applies? :disgust:

& at the end of the day nobody cares

So had it been owned by an UK citizen what difference would that have made? The Clyde has had the MV Captayannis lying capsized and aground since 1974 and there is actually a view there to despoil.

WTF?

There are various benefits and disadvantages to being in the EU, but I've never heard of an abandoned-boat-cleanup service making the list.

It was totes in the Maastricht Treaty. Clause 1, paragraph 1, "cleaning up abandoned sailing boats".

It was all over the papers. Big red line for John Major, it was.

That's a Greek boat! You see, foreigners again, coming over here, taking our jobs, spoiling our views.

But that was long before they joined the EU - so you can't blame it on that.

Just think of all the British shipwrecks dotted around the world - also nothing to do with the EU.

However Mrs May could make it a strong negotiating point in the Brexit talks - no more freedom to abandon your shipwrecks in UK waters, and remove those that are here and belong to EU members.

Helped a friend take his new boat down the Exe yesterday and we counted two sunk boats and about 10 that had been neglected for years and will sink in due course.

Sadly nobody wants to clear them up and toss them in landfill.

There are a couple on the HM moorings on the Hamble. actually saw the HM launch alongside one and checking her out. Hopefully they can be removed / sold and the space used by someone else.

Anyone know if there was a happy outcome to the boat that was stuck on the mud north of Fowley Island Emsworth for a few months after the gales early in the year in Chichester harbour. Always saw the owner trying to dig a trench and felt his pain. I'm hoping he got away with it lightly (apart from missing so much sailing).

My boat sank on its mooring during a f11 storm. The HM declared it a danger to navigation. I was insured. The insurer and the local yard made a contract and the boat was salvaged.

The Authority will look for ownership and insurer.

I was elected to Committee of a YC. I shared the job of identifying all the boats not being up to date in fees. We had to tread lightly of course, as owners may be deceased. Where we could we found the widows and sent a very careful letter explaining the situation. We didn't ask for unpaid fees. We asked them to instruct us as to their wishes - sell or dispose? We offered to value the boats f.o.c. if they wished.

Guy Fawkes had a good remembrance that year.

The Authority will seek ownership. If no owner can be found then eventually the cost of removal will, somehow or other, be borne by ourselves.
