Blacksmith sculptors :D Real Engineering & even blacksmiths were foundered on practicality, something completely absent from that exhibition/collection/I'm not sure how you describe it

"Art". It's not supposed to be practical.

PS: Come to think of it I take back some of the criticism I levelled against the sculptor. There is one exhibit I like.A cute little depiction of an anvil type character. That did involve skill to make & some character/sense of humour.I guess the Councillors bought that one & had all the rest thrown in for free :D

This one? Yes, it's cute in an undemanding way.

I'm not sure that means we started it so much as acted in self defence?

No, we started it to free poor Poland from military occupation, the irony of which doubtless appealed to Indians, Malaysians, Africans and indeed to all the hundreds of millions of people whose countries we were keeping under military occupation at the time.

I'd be very surprised if the bomb disposal people could not identify the weapon and its years of manufacture?

Of if they find something that looks a lot like a Torpedo in P'mth Harbour, do they just blow it up rather than poking it about for more info? If it was my decision that's what I'd do.

I seem to remember that Chamberlain (English I believe?) was the one who declared war on Germany.

I think technically, Chamberlain issued an "Ultimatum". Which was ignored. Resulting in a state of war.

I seam to recall a whole lot of leaders did the same thing back in June and July 1914. Was the British Ultimatum issued by Lloyd George or did he just step up after. I hear he was Welsh.:)

Apparently it was about 4 feet long so too short for a torpedo, so probably a 500lb, second one the dredging boys have found, not surprising really with the number the Germans chucked over Portsmouth and surrounding area. Im sure it was identified and dated, they just blow them up.

Many years ago, a friends brother found one whilst doing ground works for an office in Portsmouth, he and his buddy 'thought' it was a buried milk churn so tried repeatedly whacking the end off with a spade, untill the site manager stopped them. :hopeless: I would love to have seen the Bomb disposal guys face when he turned up and asked 'has it been disturbed much ?' :eek-new:

No but it's supposed to commemorate Henry Court a practical man.I doubt he would be flattered by that pile of mouldering peculiarities.I suspect he would much rather be associated with something like HMS Warrior I know I would.

That's the one though I think his face could have been better highlighted. It is actually very skilfully made & I take my hat off the the bloke that designed & made it.

I would think we intervened with Poland because we knew Hitler would'nt stop there & the whole of Europe was threatened,us included. Like I said self defence & I'm not for one minute justifying our adventures in other Countries which certainly leaves a lot to be desired but is the subject for another thread?

......................... but is the subject for another thread?

I thought it was you who brought European politics into a thread about an abandoned boat.
So much for the benefits of being in the EU! It would seem that EU citizens can act irresponsibly in our Country & there is nothing that we can do about it.I wonder how many other situations there are in which this applies?
Now, like Basil Fawlty, you don't want us to mention the war.

My Czech friends might disagree ...

That aside, The BBC have one of AJP Taylor's excellent lectures on "How Wars Begin" available on iPlayer. It's the one about the Second World War and is well worth listening too. His conclusion surprised me.

I've grown up with the consequences of that war 'ringing in my ears' as did most people from my generation & I don't need some expert to regurgitate it. What interests me much more now is the fight to save this whole planet going down the drain with "climate change" & the shear number of humans destroying it.......Which neatly brings me back to the subject of this thread & selfish people dumping rubbish in the environment.
(I may watch that program if it did'nt involve me in paying a 150 quid to the BBC for the privilege).

Fair enough. I downloaded it before the new restrictions came in.

He reckoned the Second World War started after the Battle of El Alamein; before that it was a lot of localised conflicts, but not a world war. It's an old programme, and the consensus amongst historians may well have changed, but he makes a fascinating case for it.
