Hi
I failed a question on the rya radio test.
"You see a yacht on fire not far from your boat. What do you do?"
I said 'send a dsc distress relay alert and a distress relay voice message" which is wrong.
I'm guessing the correct answer is "send a dsc distress alert and a distress relay voice message".

Think for a leisure boat with Class D DSC, it’s all ships urgency not distress relay which IIRC isn’t available. Then if no response after ?2.5 minutes a voice mayday relay. Or the other way around. But it’s a minefield of unnecessary complexity and I may be way off.

This confused me a bit on the course - you're looking at the difference between an alert and a message.

So iirc it's DSC alert, voice alert, voice message

(unless I've remembered it all wrong)

Well exactly so. But the OP was asking about the RYA Exam question which bears no connection to reality!
Yeah I get that. But the exams are all a bit "non real world ". Bit like learning to drive, you learn how to pass the test not how to drive on the road.
Did the OP fail the test because of this incorrect answer??

See here:- marine-radio-distress-relay-protocol "In a relay situation, there is no longer a requirement to send a DSC ‘Urgency Announcement’. The ‘Mayday Relay’ voice call remains unchanged and should still be transmitted as normal. "

I believe there is no DSC distress "relay" function. It certainly does not exist as an option on my VHF, so the answer should be "send a mayday relay voice call"

Call the coastguard and report the fire and the position of the yacht.
If calling the coastguard via DSC that reports your position which may help.
Assuming in range of the coastguard of course.
If unable to contact a Coastguard station, send a ‘Mayday Relay’ call, addressed to ‘All Stations’,
