RYA magazine

My copy had loose advertising AND loose pages.

Mind you, very little of interest to me in the content - a snippet on a shipping study in the Pentland Firth, a couple of mentions of Marine Protected Areas, and a nearly content-free article on MOB which basically said forward planning is a good idea.

Total time to go cover to cover about 3 minutes, and then in the bucket with it. Unfortunately, this seems to be a typical copy. Has to be one of the worst "magazines" I've come across.

On page three there is a list of reasons to be a member. :(

That answers the question as to whether or not to remain a member !

Good bye RYA .

make a film

I think they should have a no tosh button when you join

make a little film of the leaflets and tosh

it will achieve nothing but you will feel so much better

PS I am still not entirely sure what the RYA does for you. I am a lapsed member. But I love all the money they give to Ben et al

There, you see James Jermain, it's not just me :)

Actually I rather like the RYA mag.

On receiving it, I just hold it by one corner above the recycle/waste bin and shake gently. Similar technique with other mags.

I completely agree that the accompanying junk is a real PIA. I don't know what it is because it goes straight into the recycle bin. I'm a strong supporter of RYA and their role of governing body etc but you'd think, especially that they only produce 4 per year, the content would be a little more worthy. It generally takes just a few minutes to skip-read cover to cover. Later, read any article which caught my interest, then consign it to rejoin it's unopened, unread accompanying junk mail.

Why does it quote a price on the front cover if it's a members only magazine?

The marketing men clearly think it has a good buying demographic because it's absolutely full advertisements.

Note to Deborah Cornick. 6/10. Must try harder to please the curmudgeonly members of this forum.

You're a slow reader :D

Waste of resources (theirs and the world's). We would be better served if they employed some decent lobbyists and scrapped the mag.

After scanning it for a few minutes and deciding there was NOTHING to interest me in it, it went in the round file.

I'm seriously thinking of contacting the RYA to take me off the mailing list.

In fact, calculation time, It costs me £40 per year to be a member, These days about the only contact I have with them is to renew the ICC, which if I was a non-member would cost me £40, for 5 years.

I have been a member for 9 years, while in the early days it was nice to feel part of the club and support it, other than vague wishy washy pronouncements about diesel, eborders etc , I can see no direct benefit to me. I think I have kept it going only from inertia.

Times are hard, this may be one of the things that gets dropped to save cash.

RYA ignores cruisers

We agree with all the comments about the RYA magazine. Far too much 'confetti' but at least it generates advertising revenue for the RYA coffers. Let's hope the advertisers don't read this forum and discover all their literature goes from letterbox to waste bin without a single item being read.

The magazine is nicely designed but there's precious little content of interest to cruising members. As stated by others, it takes just a couple of minutes to read.

Our RYA membership comes up for renewal soon and we won't be renewing. We think we ought to support the official body but cruising members seem to be such a low priority. The RYA seems transfixed by dinghy racers, surf boarders and the Olympics. What practical benefits do we as cruising members get from membership? Well, nothing.

+1 well said

Unfortunately, I renewed my membership in January, But will anyone please tell me why after eleven years I should renew it next January???

I applaud their training courses and some publications, but they don't need my membership for that.

I am not a racer, nor do I get involved in form of club activity. I just like to get in my boat and go sailing.

I am getting really fed up with the RYA's Olympic coverage and self serving and marginally useful boating "schemes".

I am sure the usual thread swing will occur and all the RYA supporters will now post to support the RYA, and if so I shall look forward to their views :)

mine is up for renewal soon, i have been a continuous member since 1974.
it would be a shame to leave but are we getting any benefits, i do not need to have free certificates as i do not have any :)

I'd have to agree, the mag is rubbish, and it follows the rest is too. I gave up my membership a few years ago when I discovered it was just a club and had no power at all.

Just to be inquisitive, if you are not an RYA member, how do you get to read the magazine?

And if you rate it rubbish, why?

PS I am a member, read the magazine this morning and found it desperately uninteresting.

I don't agree with this. RYA do try very hard to cover all areas (and as noted by others in previous posts, most of the top end Olympic racing stuff is funded from sponsors etc not memberships).

If they are not interested in yachties,
- who designed, implemented and manages the world leading Yachtmaster / DaySkipper etc training courses
- who led the campaign to retain the reduced duty on red diesel (OK I think this campaign was misguided but it was what most yachties wanted)
- why do they have their range of area cruising advisors

I think the forum-ites are being very grumbky and negative as usual. They do a very difficult and thankless job very well

Good question, why do they have area cruising advisors? What are they?

Like I said their courses are very good, but are they subsidised by membership or run at a commercial rate by sea schools, I don't know?

Do they need members?

I think the main reason I joined eleven years ago was probably because I believed the RYA would need my support to help continue to run the excellent courses and lobby on my behalf so I could continue crruising. Not so sure now?

I don't what to be a member of an organisation that "wants to "cover all areas", so maybe the Cruising Association would be better for me?
