RYA Calls for Limited and Controlled Access to Boats

I read somewhere that Sweden's death rate is 23 per 100,000 compared to 4 in Norway and Finland. The final analysis in a couple of years will be interesting.
You may well have to wait 30 years for the "more sensitive stuff" or will that be 50 years to save any embarrassment

Yep, certainly complete ban on sports and activities that rely upon large gathering of people (spectators) like football and racing, ban religieous gatherings, ban using te London Underground and busses, that should do it . Then start spraying our streets with something suitable, like they apparently do abroad, very effective certainly; That only leaves Golfing, Swimming, Croquet, and Sailing as a pastime
Bozo stated the other day, bikes would be the answer in London

Keel boat sailing and motorboating is predominately done by those over 45 yrs, with plenty in the 65 and older group as well. It's this latter group in particular that will be at risk of contracting the disease if restrictions are lifted. As you say, their treatment will be a drain on the economy by the very group that is financially going to contribute the least back to the exchequer. Would seem to make sense to ban these groups from sailing for a year or so until the vaccine arrives to help the overall national economy recover fastest.

Might lead to some nice boats coming up on the second hand market as well, what's not to like? IHT is also likely to go through the roof so (the estates of) those that beak the rule will also be looking for a quick sale.

If you get to within 2m of me whilst sailing... you have hit my boat and I am probably sinking..

The reality os that sailing (and motor boating) is a very safe and low risk pastime compared to many others.

It’s got to be simple .. keep 2m apart and don’t open pubs /restaurants and large gatherings ...
anyone who flouts this is a moron and deserves all that’s coming

I am in a high risk category.. (lung disease) .. but for the sake of the next generation who are being bankrupted by the debts stacking up paying people to not work but do not actually get ill... I would happily end lockdown and live my life with great care.

And standing 6 feet apart will give you a dose? Or a metre?

The message is too strong and fails to allow for common sense. Certainly some people need strict rules, but applying these means returning to the middle ages.

COVID-19 Update from MDL Marinas - 10th May

Under guidance, government has announced easing some of its lockdown regulations. This now means :

Stay at home as much as possible
Work from home if you can
Limit contact with other people
Keep your distance if you go out (2 metres apart where possible)
Wash your hands regularly
Self-isolate if you or anyone in your household has symptoms.

We have social distancing measures in place and look forward to welcoming people coming to perform maintenance and security checks on their boats. And while we understand the reasoning behind the government's decision to ease lock down rules, in the way it has, we share your frustration about not being able to get out onto the water just yet. We are waiting for any leisure boating changes from the port authorities and will keep you updated with any changes.

We're so proud of our marina staff who have been taking care of the site, our buildings, our customers' boats, and keeping an eye on our tenants' premises. They’ve been making sure that everything is as it should be for your arrival, including appropriate social distancing signage and safe systems of work. We’re doing everything we can to keep both staff and customers safe, and to make our customers experience the best it can be for the months to come as we all adjust to our ‘new normal’

During lockdown the teams have been busy with a limited amount of commercial lifting and have ensured contractors have been onto our sites for essential maintenance. Under the new guidelines, more of our tenant businesses will be back in their offices with staff working on site. So when you visit, please make sure you adhere to the guidelines above. If you need to make a booking or have any specific questions or want to discuss a boat movement please contact your marina. We ask that you please give us as much notice as you can and we'll try our absolute best to fulfil your request.
Your season pack is now ready to collect from your marina office. In there you will find 2 access cards, tide tables and information about OTIUM (an exciting new rewards package), plus partner offers like discounts on valets, and maintenance. In the meantime you can check out the offers on our website

It’s been a challenging few months for everyone; thank you for all your patience and understanding.

As we keenly follow the results of the restrictions lifting, and ease our way out of lockdown we’ll be making an exciting announcement that underpins all of the reasons for continuing to berth with MDL.

Best wishes

Explaining how things will change from Wednesday, he added: "You can sit in the sun in your local park, you can drive to other destinations, you can even play sports but only with members of your own household."

Isn't sailing a sport ?

RYA welcomes return to boating
May 10, 2020
Stay alert, stay safe
The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) warmly welcomes a return to the water following the Prime Minister’s announcement today [10 May 2020] during which he stated that from this Wednesday, the Government wants to encourage people to take more and even unlimited amounts of outdoor exercise.
Since the lockdown commenced, the RYA has presented a strong case for boating to be one of the first activities that can be resumed safely within the parameters for social distancing.
From Wednesday, 13 May unlimited outdoor activity will be permitted in England, and we understand that this will include all forms of boating. The Prime Minister also indicated that people would be permitted to travel to other destinations in order to exercise. Any activity will still need to be alone or with members of a single household, and social distancing must be followed at all times.

Good news I hope, lifting restrictions on Boatyards and Marinas, plus Harbours so as to allow OWNER activity on their boats; Might ask if the RYA notice above allows interaction with Boatyard /Marina /harbour staff in order to Launch etc ?

Where boat yards have furloughed staff they will have to end their furlough to bring them back to work. This may cause some delay while they work out what to do. As an employer they will also have to put in place adequate measures for social distancing, hand washing, toilet facilities and cleaning. So there may be some delay in opening up.

I would have thought any refusal to launch boats is now unwarranted. Staff who can't work from home are encouraged to return, and activity on the water is allowed from Wednesday.

Reading Glanville's patronising waffle is quite hard at times. Wasn't at all clear from this missive that the MDL marinas would be open or not -- wording like "we look forward to welcoming...".

Of all the marinas, MDL's lockdown was one of the toughest with absolutely no access.

Yet none of this was actually necessary...

Boating is one o f the safest sports about..
Boaters are by their nature risk controllers who control risk
Nothing has actually changed since January ...

But we have been threatened with fines if we try to sail
