Rusty tools

Not impressed with Evaporust, quite expensive and not entirely effective. I've found soaking in diesel is a good way of freeing rust seized pliers.
My problem is losing tools overboard - particularly Stillsons. ( they have an interesting story being invented by Captain Stillson after the civil war).

As I've said before, use 10% molasses for a week or more.

You will be totally amazed at the results.

Used by classic car restorers to de-rust mechanical bits and pieces.

Also the cheapest available.

I saw a you tube video on it and it worked. Then I tried muriatic acid and achieved the same results in an hour.

Fine, but muriatic acid / HCL is dangerous stuff whilst molasses is not and is biodegradable.

I have used HCL before with not as good results as molasses.

Once you've de-rusted there is no anti-rust agent that comes close to creosote. It soaks into a rust pocked surface and just stops the rust dead.

Your tools will smell aromatic for a while but the pong soon goes, and water just beads up and slides off them for years.

It works even if you don't or can't derust the metal, soaking into the rust for ever. Forget painting it afterwards though!
