I thought ski boats were required to set a course maintaining a certain minimum distance from other craft in order to avoid the situation described. Of course the rule preceding all of the colregs that one stay out of the way of all idiots can always be assumed to be precedent.

The motorcycle analogy is not a bad one. I recall reading in a book by Stephen Fry how, after buying a Harley Davidson, he was told by a surgeon that there is a generic term used by doctors for motorcyclists: donors.

Your attitude is absolutely right with regard to how one should act.

Don't worry about the petty semantics re. rules of the road seen on this & other boards. These people are essentially just posturing for the fun of it along with providing some degree of education. I think - HOPE - most or all of these posters would react sensibly rather than slavishly to the letter of the law in possible collision situations.

Am I being naive I wonder ?

I must agree, I am always very wary of water skiers, tho' to be fair in the Deben they are usually good and keep to their designated side of the river. You do of course get the occasional idiot who weaves about on front of other boats.

I was close hauled on a port tack with the shore ( and very shallow water to starboard) he came at me from +- 15 degrees from starboard bow. once I realised that he was not making any attempt to turn, 2 or 3 degrees would have been fine I turned sharply to starboard and he sped past my port side.

I have read thru most of the replys I am not looking for an excuse to STAND on because I'm a sail boat, My mentality is that if a colision can be avoided everybody involved must do every thing possible irrispective of who has right of way
Was just wondering who has legal right under the above senario

If you read rule 17 of the col regs, it explains what you should do in this thread.

In this case the yacht is required to maintain course, assuming right of way, if it becomes evident that the other boat is not taking action to avoid a collision, then the yacht is required to.

I wonder how many on the forum know the col regs ?????????

Re: Where Rules of the road don\'t apply

Encounters with skiers in the water is a common event going up and down the Wareham channel at the back end of Poole harbour. You cannot alter course to avoid them, as 0.1 to 0.4 feet of water under the keel is the norm. All you can do is reduce speed (put engine into neutral) and glide past, watching him as you pass.
Ski boats frequently zoom to and fro across your path, you just have to watch and be prepared to slow or stop.

I know enough about colregs to know that it NEVER gives a yacht "right of way". What is often not understood is that it is as important for the stand on vessel to maintain course and speed, as it is for the give way vessel to take early and obvious action to avoid collision.

Rule 17, I think.

Sorry but the reply was a simplistic reply to a simplistic question.

What are the Rules of the road?
