Rubberised coating for curly mic cable

Having initiated the dsc call you still have to use the vhf voice function. The SH has both on the external fist Mike which is cleaner and faster you also have the function on the fist Mike attached to the vhf direct. How can changing screens on my garmin. Finding the buttons and pressing the right ones with the correct dsc allocation then going to the vhf fist Mike be easier

The targets are overlaid on the plotter, if one is of interest/concern just tap it and you get all of his details, speed, course, CPA etc. If that's all OK close the page to return to the chart display. If there was a concern and you wanted to speak to the other vessel just tap the "call on VHF" button, if you're happy with the default channel (You have the option of changing channels) tap the "call" button.

I can overlay my SH radio on my garmin- according to SH although that needs to be verified by their tech dept not a sales rep but as I said I do not want to at this stage

You can almost certainly overlay AIS on the plotter, which model of VHF and plotter do you have ?

But you are the forum wiz on this so I will bow to your superior knowledge and step back from debate about something which I know little

So your comment re needing a garmin VHF over a SH is not entirely valid other than being absolutely certain of seem less operation my garmin 95 sv does all that with my AMEC AIS and should do it with my VHF.

Once I had stripped the failed curly cable, I considered replacing with a long length of heat shrink, but I don’t have a single piece that long. Like Paul, I didn’t want to replace the whole DSC. I like the air hose proposal.

Your Garmin plotter cannot initiate a VHF call to a SH VHF, it can only do so with a Garmin VHF.

I don’t remember the thread but I have used Sugru to good effect on cables when they start to get damaged. It not paint on - more like plasticine.

Sugru is expensive for what it is in my opinion.

YouTube shows how to make Sugru; simply mix cheap silicone sealant with corn starch; I have done it and used it and fixed many items that are still holding strong after more than 10 years.

I did buy Sugru when it first came out, so I can compare the DIY version to the expensive Sugru.

I consider Sugru a successful … I seek the correct phrase without being rude… “marketing”?…(insert your choice of word here).

It is something most people with any common sense or DIY skills can make to the same standard as the expensive branded stuff.

It is not as flexible as liquid insulation tape or latex, so I would not recommend it in this instance anyway.

There was a thread on here a few months back where someone posted a paint on rubberised coating for curly mic cables. Mine is just starting to crack a little but i cannot find the relevant thread, anyone remember what the stuff was ?

If possible and willing, do let us know what you chose to repair the curly cable.

I have tried this ''Liquid rubber'' on a few things and it is amazing, very flexible and resistant; I think it is sold to make roofs watertight. It's maybe a little too liquid, to build some thickness (for example for tool handles) one needs a few coats, otherwise a funny product. You could dip the cable and then let it dry.

Same thing happened with my Simrad rd68. I'd find bits of plastic all over the places where the cable was slowly disintegrating . I ended up buying a really good replacement FTM 5 mic from these guys on eBay Items for sale by theservicecentre | eBay.

I have replaced the cable on my Navman VHF. I was given a scrap radio that still had a good cable so swapped them over. Not difficult for anyone used to a bit of electronics work and can solder. Finding a replacement cable to buy is harder.

Both the radio's we have came with the boat. But personally if I was buying a new one, I would insist on one that had a plug in microphone like they all used to have before the bean counters decided they could save a few pence by ommiting that and opting for a captive microphone lead.
