Are there any old Falmouth hands out there who know Ruan Creek well? Next summer I want to take my trailer sailer up as far as the footpath that runs from the southern bank of Ruan Creek to Philleigh, and possibly anchor there midstream overnight. With my bilge boards up I can draw as little as 12 inches. My questions are: 1) The chart shows a channel that dries 0.2m at LAT -- is this accurate? 2) How wide is the channel -- enough for a 20 footer to turn around in? 3) Is the bottom, mud, rock or what? 4) Is the start of the footpath easily accessible by dinghy? 5) Is the pub at Philleigh worth all the effort?

Any answers most gratefully received!

We anchor @50 13.568 n 004 59.133

this dries completly and has a firm silica type mud.

Or why not try the channals creek infront off trelisick house, this again dries out.

the smugglers which you refer to is ok, or there is the pandora which is in restronguet creek again you could dry out alongside the pontoon. most people do when they have one drink to many and the tide goes out !
still i can think off worse place to get stranded.

Philleigh inn / Smugglers cottage, two different establishments !

you should not have any problem in the Ruan River, deep mud in places with a coating of mica.
If it was me going there for the first time I would go up early on the coming tide,
be able to have a good look around, suss it out!
The East wind can whip down through the river quite fresh at times.

A very nice anchorage in the mouth of the creek.

Oh and yes, it does pretty well dry out the further up you go!

Funny thing is I never looked at the name of the place, always to much of a hurry to sample the goods on offer !...
And when I left too piddled to notice./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

smugglers is better for lunch, but as they point out, they are not a pub! Can be a bit busy when boat trips arrive though. Pandorra is very friendly, but can be extremely busy indeed with very long waits for food- and I mean long ! Both are perfect if you catch a quiet time. You can possibly get up to the Heron towards Truro if tide is ok. More modern, light design. By the way, there is a verygood public slip at grove park, falmouth dock (in fact, an amazing slip for £5!), and another new good one at Mylor, though the marinas own slip is an alternative for a fee. Either way, you ll have no problems. I d also just mention the jolly helpful harbour staff at St Mawes. You can often tie up there and visit those pubs there as well.

"there is a verygood public slip at grove park"

That is very true. Probably one of the widest and best surfaced in the region and very reasonable. Remember, however, that you can't leave your car there and will have to park it on a road out of the centre of the town as there is no car park in Falmouth which permits more than 24 hour parking.

Grove Place Watersports Centre is run by the Falmouth Harbour Commission http:// www.falmouthport.co.uk/html/tariff/groveplace.shtml for full details and current rates.

Many thanks to all who responded. I have plotted those co-ordinates on the chart and I see that it's possible to anchor even further up than I intended!
