I would have thought an event of this scale possibly involves paid staff to do the admin / event coordination and ensure all the safety plans, CG and HM liaisons, media promotion (to feed the sponsors) etc. If all the boats have trackers are they provided as part of the entry fee? Once you get ashore at the finish is there hospitality? Even with a reduced entry I’d imagine this is the sort of thing your average club couldn’t pull off with volunteer manpower year after year - I’ve managed events in other sports on a smaller scale than this and it’s the sort of thing you do once and say thank god that’s over and I don’t have to do it again for four years!Wonder if the high entry fee puts people off? I know there's costs involved in running the event, but they have a lot of corporate sponsors (listed on website), and its not like they have to lay marks, or even a start line...
Ok they have a finish line (boat), but what else costs?
Yes. It really wasn’t very windy. Beat to the needles was mostly in 12-14. Some puffs to 16. Down the back was mostly 14-16. We briefly saw 19 a couple of times but that was it. Most wind we saw was 21 briefly on the return up the Solent.Tracker seems to be down
Looking at the various weather stations I guess some might be wondering what the fuss was all about
Not looking likely we’ll get anyone to the island today.I felt for the tail end of the fleet who seemed to get caught up in the thunderstorm and the subsequent wind ‘hole’
The protest section reveals someone who tried to change to a non spinnaker handicap after the cut off and a general moan about one boat’s number. On the former I am told the website implied a cut off of 20:00 on 6 June.
My usual boat and pontoon neighbour but one is off shortly to the prize giving at Cowes, will there be a representative to collect yours?
As of 12:30 on Sunday still no race reports on Y&Y......
Also, there was (as of 1800 uk time on the day of the actual race) NO articles about Round the Island Race on yachtsandyachting dot com. Which is unusual!!!
......
My mate says that they always moved the IOW round a bit to make the beat to the Needles as awkward as possibleand its not like they have to lay marks, or even a start line...

Normally there would be reports on the day, with leaders at the Needles etc. But this year nothing other than a big multihull setting line honours (surprise).
Quite a different experience to us, 20 knots from shortly after the start, about 25 by the time we got to Yarmouth, about 25 all the way round the back of the island with occasionally more and 25 gusting nearly 30 all the way from Bembridge to the finish with a nice thunderstorm and vicious gusts to help us to the finish line!Yes. But because of the forecast we were probably a little more conservative on sail choice than we would have been if we’d just gone out in that breeze.
Fun was had!
Banter are very good sailors!WhatsApp from the Royal Southern ..
Many congratulations to the Handley/James team on Banter, who won her class in yesterday's Round The Island Race .
and to Quailo III who got line honours and also first place on corrected to win the classics.

Weird that we had such different experiences! We’d have liked that breeze down the back, would have got us on the plane properly, rather than just a few surfs.Quite a different experience to us, 20 knots from shortly after the start, about 25 by the time we got to Yarmouth, about 25 all the way round the back of the island with occasionally more and 25 gusting nearly 30 all the way from Bembridge to the finish with a nice thunderstorm and vicious gusts to help us to the finish line!
Not odd at all - most of the racing sailors I’ve met are ugly b’s and the organisers probably don’t want to frighten people off sailing.Still absolutely zero photos or videos on the RTI website. Which is really odd.
I’ve got some but have not yet extracted them from the camera. Some of flaming, I hope, others may be able to pick themselves out.Not odd at all - most of the racing sailors I’ve met are ugly b’s and the organisers probably don’t want to frighten people off sailing.
Any of Sfida so I can send to Gareth?I’ve got some but have not yet extracted them from the camera. Some of flaming, I hope, others may be able to pick themselves out.
