Round Britain in a Merry Fisher 625

As you know, Arny, I have the same boat as you and I'd hope mine wouldn't be knackered after a trip like that......... well in use as the estate agents say, but knackered...... bl@@dy hell, what have I bought? Yer know, I'm planning to chuck my 'orrible elf service job at about the same time as you're setting off....... d'ya need a back up boat? Hmmm. Good luck anyway. By the by, what level of forumite sponsorship are you hoping for? I'll gladly hand over some dosh, so how much (sounds sorta stingey doesn't it). /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ardrishaig.
Portpatrick to Ardrishaig 80 miles.
With Troon or Ardrossan to bolt to.
Can,t miss out the Straits man!
No need to go into Conwy though.
Menai Bridge for the night, fuel for boat and stomach, then out to Puffin and on to IOM.
Round Britain and miss The Swellies? just NOT ON!
Got lots of charts and Almanacs at Home, I know, sad innit!

I managed to miss out the whole of the west coast of England, including the Swellies, when in Wales.

Course my preffered route, would be up the East coast of Ireland.

Going places like Swellies. Means getting up in the middle of the night, especially on long trips. I preffer to just bumble along in the day time, with no time constraints.

Besides, once out of local known area, why make life difficult, going into tidal, navigationally challenging places, when the sea could be rough, or bad visability. Better to save them for a nice day, when the tides happen to be right.

Wow Arny - and in a 625. Not sure I've got the bottle to do it in my 805 !! MrCramp is right - don't go to GY, go to Lowestoft instead. Use the RNSYC. If you're stuc, use the Lowestoft Haven Marina who, by that time, will have a pontoon affair in the Hamilton Dock. I'm following you on your webs ite for sure. Good luck.

Just to report...

You lot have come up with SO many great suggestions and comments I have to rethink the passage plan completely I think. In particular the whole passage north of Wales will now change. I am aiming for shorter legs and looking at IOM, Larne, Skye, Oban... much more manageable legs and better all round.

THANKS EVERYONE... you are all so enthusiastic and supportive.

Lots to rework now...

My suggested route would be:

Plymouth, taking the A374 from the Charles Cross roundabout then onto the A379.

Join the A38 to the M5.

That way you will miss out on the Bristol Channel and there are plenty of petrol stations and you can also get a Burger King if you are hungry. Beats trolling for Mackerel.

From Birmingham, it a straight run to the Scottish border, where I would be inclined to ask.

The way back is easier, it is downhill all the way and the Scots should see you over the border.

HWMBO and I are Scots and mates of Paul's - we are planning to accompany him in our boat with Sal his SWMBO, on the first leg to see him on his way north to Scotland. Hopefully we can accompany him on the final leg home to pick up what ever pieces our fellow Scots have left /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif On that note, maybe I should direct him to the recent 'Sottish Midgie' post on Reader to Reader. I'll donate the midge repellant /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Don't want an escort do you? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Glad to see you've cut down on the leg lengths. You should, if possible, take your time up the W.Coast of Scotland or else you will miss out on the the most superb cruising area in the UK.

Now there is a thought... Round Britain in Company!!!

I am having company on first (and possible last) legs from Anne, Paul_Gray and SWMBO (see previous post) but SWMBO will be on Anne and Paul's boat as I want to do the whole trip solo but I don't know how I would feel about having company on other legs...? It certainly would be safer having another boat(s) there, particularly if they have local knowledge... something that is invaluable in unfamiliar waters... BUT I feel that in a way I wouldn't be doing it solo.

I will think about that one...

Who did your curtains?

Is the case of beer on the foredeck your first stores for the trip?

SWMBO did the curtains... at the moment they are a bit temporary using sticky velcro... they keep falling down!!!!!

The "beer" is a spare prop... I have a 19" pitch at the moment which is standardfor that engine but I also have a 21" pitch which I may fit for the journey depending on the results of the sea trials scheduled for March.

Which ever prop I don't fit will come with me as a spare.

Beer is a bit of a sore point with me and this trip because i have decided not to have incohol on the boat for the trip to prevent any temptation /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I will bring a bottle or two of single malt back unopened tho /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
