ROUND BRITAIN MBC BURGEE CHALLENGE 2004

How’s this for a grand idea?

(For charity, publicity, or just the hell of it!)

The aim is to circumnavigate GB (most likely using the Caledonian cop-out, in true ‘Round Britain Power Boat Race’ fashion), with an MBC Burgee, using as many forum regulars as possible to partake in its relay-race style journey.

The said burgee would be accompanied on its route by a digital camera and a logbook. Daily records of progress and relevant photos of current locality/forum members involved could be posted. Perhaps a specific forum could be established.

The experience and progress should prove news worthy to MBM/MBY etc.

We would need to be sure sufficient forum members were interested and available, particularly to cover the more remote Scottish sections.

‘Handover ceremonies’ could provide a good excuse for forum members to get together in various locations. No doubt the Southern sector would be split up into quite short sections due to number of available participants, but the Northern areas would obviously require some pretty dedicated sailing from a small minority.

Due to the number of Thames based members, it could be appropriate to start and end the journey well up river, and later events could even see the Burgee getting special day trips down the likes of Windermere and Loch Lomond as appropriate coastal locations are reached.

A final ‘awards’ event could be timed to coincide with LBS 2005 (or SBS 2004 if progress was swift!) to present ‘trophies’ for the fasted average speed over a section, the slowest, the bravest… etc. etc. (Then we could hand it over to the Med guys for 2005!)

Is there enough interest/potential support to make this idea worth developing?

well. I will happily do a bit. But slightly short of a Uk-based boat. It ought not to take too long, incidentally, only bout 1700 miles at 20ish knots is erm 80 running hours. Tell you what, hoikc that boat out of yours and dump it at say fleetwood and we can wham it round clockwise to dover ready for a truck to the med.

Note that 1700 miles wd actually take you to the med, ahem.

Lack of boat no problem. Just hire a Princess 30DS from Calley cruisers at Inverness, and you can do the canal stretch to Fort William.

BTW is you tender garage big enough for a Birchwood 27 (or M'dreamers 30' Bayliner)?

Quiet!!!! - I'd already worked out that I could recover part of the £1 per hour I'm paying him by putting my boat in there with the wife, kids and dog living on board.

Great idea Martyn, love to do the Windermere bit.

Haydn how much extra would your burgeeman charge for a special one with our Usernames on? It would be good if everyone who took part identified themselves

I'm up for this, sounds like a right larf.

In 1969 they started form Pompey, Fairey Marine were sponsored by Ford, I have the Ford promo vid of the event, think it was done in ten legs. Think there was 4 Huntsman 28's and one 31, mine not one of them.

<hr width=100% size=1>Sod the Healey - I think I'll buy an E-Type.

At the risk of drifting my own thread, was the promo film called 'Ride the White Horses'? It was a film called such that first got me interested in boating as an 11 year old. It was repeatedly shown by the BBC when they were gearing up BBC2 for launch.

I'd love to get hold of a copy if it is. Think the winner was 'UFO'. Saw the actual boat in Leeds when they had an annual boat show. I remember the rally driver Timo Makkinen took part, and not sure if he was driving UFO.

Let's hope more supporting (and serious) replies keep coming, we may get this idea to fly!!!?

Good Alistairr, looks like you've volunteered to be the Scottish Regional Co-ordinator on the committee!

Hopefully the wet evening may bring in a few more supporters.

Right,

What we need is now one of our more IT flavoured members to set up an 'mbc-round-britain.org.uk' type web site with a suitable intro, space for sponsors ads, and a map with all suitable ports. Perhaps it would need to be regionalised to give enough detail. We could then gradually add the proposed route and participants as things develope.

Any offers for the Webmaster ??

Take it
