I had a chat to Richard Brown at Plymouth Sea School yesterday. He is very happy to organise what would probably be a one day course on rope splicing if there are a minimum of four takers. You will have to discuss timings with the school directly (or 'dreckly' as some say round here). From his conversation I understand a professional rigger/instructor would come and give the tuition using new braidline.

I have no interest in Plymouth Sea School other than they sometimes use me as one of the local examiners. If Plymouth is no good, and you want approach a school or rigging company in another area, carry on...

If anyone needs to stay a night down here, PM me to discuss the options. I won't be able to reply until the New Year as I leave the country today!

Hi, We could offer the use of one of our boats as accomodation for a rope splicing course if we had one alongside. Sandy, Principal, Plymouth Sailing School.

Since John's posting I have e-mailed Plymouth Sailing School and had the following reply:-
"There would be no problems with organising a splicing course for some time
in the new year. All we would need would be as much notice as you can give
us to find some other students.
The proposed syllabus is for you to achieve the following;
Three Strand
Back splice, Eye splice (soft and hard), short splice.
Multiplat
Eye splice
Whipping
Common, West Country.

The cost of the course will be #80 per person.
Will put your name and details on file and get back to you with dates.

I suggest anyone interested follows the link on John's original posting and e-mails them. I don't know how much accomodation John has in Plymouth but I have up to three berths on board in Mayflower Marina.

Hi, I have joined the forum as John is away for a while.

Plymouth Sailing School do offer a Ropework and Splicing course. All we need is a date and some customers. I see we have three so far. The course would consist of the following;

Three strand - Eye splice, Back splice, Short splice.
Multiplat - Eye splice
Braid/braid - Eye splice
Whipping - Common, West Country.

Expected cost would be £80 and duration one day.
Accomodation could be on one of the schools boats if there is one alongside or a nearby B&B.

We get an abundance of people that are looking for mile building and experience trips. Any chance you might offer them a berth for all or part of the trip?

Yes, suggest you/they contact me again around Easter. By then, I should have more concrete plans. Probably doing a W to E transat in July if 2 months of work proves to be enough to get the boat sorted and shaken down. Obviously anyone who is prepared to help with the prep for a few weeks will be high on the list! Boat is a 53' ketch. Thanks

Almost any company which runs marine courses will put together this sort of thing if enough peeps get together and are willing to pay the fees, Just put together enough peeps in your part of the world, and you willl have companies crawling all over to provide a service
