Hoping someone here can help. I'm refitting an old day boat and would like to fit a rope rubbing strake. Problem is I can't seem to find a supplier. Any ideas please? I could also do with some advice on how to fit it once I've found it!

Many thanks

My old clinker skiff (Cornish for rowing boat - scath) had a rope rubbing strake. I made it out of 3inch sisal rope, with spliced eyes at the end. To fit it to the gunwhale, two holes were drilled through, and one strand was copper-wired with the copper twisted inside the boat. The eyes were tied to brass screw-eyes in from the corners of the transom.

Around the bow, a "pudding fender" was made up to go over the 3inch sisal. Any spare sisal was doubled and whipped to make fenders to hang over the side, tied to a stringer inside the boat.

I no longer have the boat, as I sold it to the grandson of the boat-builder who built the boat. She was built in 1956 at a cost of £65!! Six very similar were built, but none remain afloat.

Thanks ghostly. I've had a look at euroropes but they seem to only do up to 36mm diameter and Jimmy Green 50mm. Ideally I'd like something closer to 100mm.

This is how to finish it, unlay about 12'
except for one strand, cut off the rest
at about 2' or whatever taper this neatly
then finish the taper around a bonze or
plastic ring, bind with a strand that has
not been unlaid in a spiral finishing this
tight around the rings. problem is you
waste more rope than you use if the
binding strand is part of the original
but it looks very professional.

Excellent all, thank you. Apologies for the late acknowledgement. For some reason I couldn't access the forums last time I tried. Looked like I was being blocked by a pop up script.
