I am planning to fit a rope cutter in the new year. The conventional choice seems to be between the "scissor" types, ie Spurs or Stripper.

Last summer, the Australian "Quikcutter" was advertised. It is about £100 cheaper than the scissor cutters and appears easier to fit - although I am not clear how the so called "planing" mechanism functions with ropes that are too thick to be cut completely, before they wrap.

Does anyone have experience of the Quikcutter?

No experience with that make but i do have the stripper version. At two in the morning on a moonless night i had the misfortune to encounter a piece of one inch braid on braid with a 6mm wire inside which the cutter just chomped through, the wire cut with a considerable bang. I inspected the cutter the next day and found no dammage to the cutter other than the friction discs between the metal had shattered but were still functional.
Fitting and removal of the cutter takes about five minutes.

Hi

I have had experience of the Stripper and can only say how good it is. It is expensive but it certainly does the job very well. I have fitted a few on Albin Vegas when we change to the Beta engine and they even provided an adaptor plate to make fitting even easier. Fitting takes about ten to fifteen minutes and couldnt be easier.

I don't know about the Aussie one. I bought a cheapo disc type cutter which soon went blunt and was a false economy. I now have a stripper which is as sharp now as it was when first fitted three or four years ago. It quickly cut through a rope dangling over the back last summer and cut my finger when dismantling it for cleaning this winter.

'Sailing Today' did a test of rope cutters in Ocgtober 2000. The Stripper came out best -- 'ripped out all we threw at it' -- with the ProProtector as best budget buy. The Spurs was rated 'effective but not cheap', the Plastimo no better than so-so, whilst the Shaft Knife failed miserably.

Thanks for the information.

The shaft is 25.1mm diameter. Presumably, a metric inch.

Of the cutters I have seen, I tilt towards the Stripper. The Quikcutter seems to be an unknown quantity, even though the importers http://www.H4marine.com were selling it at a discoiunt to RYA members.

If I fit a Stripper, I will certainly need a spacer, and I assume that it is necessary to draw the propeller shaft to fit the rotating blades. Has anyone had problems drilling and tapping the P bracket, with the cutlass bearing in place, for the fixed blade?

Fitted Strippers now to two different boats. Very easy to drill & tap threads in P bracket as long as you have the correct taps. Ambassador Marine offer these with the kit and not getting them is false economy. As for the spacer, again Ambassador Marine will supply these. You need to know the type of engine (obviously) and the extra space required. Their website is VERY helpful. Go to http://www.ropestripper.com

Hope this helps.

I can't rember the details now, but my P bracket is plastic and so I had to have a metal clamp supplied by Ambassador. The clamp fits around the cutlless tube with bolts through the top of the P bracket. Ambassador were very helpful in ensuring that the clamp fitted correctly.
