This is the beauty of free enterprise. One party chooses to deceive its customers while another decides to capitalize on the deception and produce a better product. I wonder which one wins?

With Steve Bambury a promenant figure with CMP at METS and obviously very much in favour with CMP , the old attitude of stick your nose out and ignore the minions is continuing with the Bambury/Smith roadshow.
Any credibility that John Mitchell hopes to salvage at the show is rapidly disappearing into the bilges.
He should converse with Steven Polgar of Linox who would confirm to him, and anyone else who asks, that the use of 420 does go back to the start of manufacture in China. Exactly what has been said all along yet vigorously denied by Bambury.
When does this circus end and the old clowns go home?

It would be very easy for CMP to determine the facts (even if we didn't believe your evidence Grant) by taking in and testing a selection of anchors from owners who bought during that period.

Isn't it time the moderators got involved with Rocnaone? If he is really, as suggested, a regular poster under another name he is clearly alive and kicking. Having been allowed on with a second name to promote his product he should be obliged to answer the legitimate questions being asked. If he's not prepared to do so then he should be banned under his "private" name. Seems to me there is a double standard operating here.

They wont do that as to do so would open them up to more demands to "put it right" and would you want to have to replace around 5000 anchors?
No with Bambury still firmly in the mix there will be no admission, no apology, no compensation for anyone other than the small numbers they claim from 2010 and there is no rush on to trace those sales no matter how easy it would be to do so.
It is easier to let the customer come to them if they want, or even hear, of any potential problem.

Today I’ve been to the METS trade show in Amsterdam, so I guess I’m one of the neophytes you refer to. I’ve spoken to John Mitchell en Peter Smith, both are still happy with the deal and confident that Rocna will survive this tragedy. They both look honest and trustworthy to me.
I am so stubborn that I bought a Rocna 20 in June this year, fully aware of all the escapades of Holdfast. Grant King as well as Peter Smith and my Dutch distributor assured me that I have a 620 MPa Rocna (the distributor has the anchors tested before he sells them).
I’v read this whole thread, all 70 pages and 692 posts, and most of the other discussion about the Rocna on several other forums and I find it very amusing. Like several of you I am eagerly waiting for “Rocna, The Movie” and the cybergame “Rocna Ultimate Warfare”. I am a technical nono and I know nothing about metals, I’m just a sailor who hates marina’s and loves to anchor and I’ve learned a lot from this discussions, about anchoring, metal strength (tensile and yield) and marketing (how not to do it).
And I’m happy with my Rocna, knowing that it is strong enough and that if it should bend (every anchor can bend) I will get a new one without a problem.
Hope you all enjoy your anchors, whichever they are, as much as I do.

How does he test them? AFAIK nobody has come up with a really satisfactory way of testing the things without damaging them. We were even told by R1 that CMP was looking at testing methods but, since then, we've heard nothing. Nothing whatsoever.....but that's the Rocna way, promise everything then fail to deliver!

I was under the impression you could test reasonably accurately with a Brinell test which is non destructive, but I could be wrong.

A proper Brinell test is almost non-destructive and will readily differentiate between the steels that have been used. For the amateur a centre punch will show whether the shank was made from 420 but it may be more difficult to decide whether it is 620 or 800. You would need to test a known Bisplate 80 against a 620 to be certain.
