Dear Mister 'DJ',

You really seem to be a humourless fellow today. One wonders what your agenda is. FWIW, the pic is mine own, taken by my own fair hand and Canon Powershot A640. Oh, and so's the coffee mug.

Here's another, taken at Fowey last Autumn. There are others...

I make no claims - good, bad, indifferent. It just is.

So Lady Campanella, Is it a real Manson, as it is very different from mine?

My dear Chris Robb, greetings.

My two pics and associated contributions were intended to bring a hint of a smile into this bloated and recirculating thread. FWIW, here's the text of a PM I sent to another, just a while ago, about this. I trust you'll now see this in the same rather less fractious light as he did.

I take this route to explain a little, in the hope of sharing a smile. Like hundreds of others, I follow the grossly-inflated thread on the Rocna Saga - but not from any personal concern or special interest. One does wonder in passing why peeps get so hot under the collar about all this.

The 'mini-Manson' pic I've shown, as a minor distraction intended to bring a gentle smile, has an little history. Some years ago, at the Southampton Boat Show, I found myself talking with the UK distributor - as one does at boat shows. In the conversation, I mentioned the idea of tiny copies of the relevant anchor product as 'boat show giveaway' keyrings, in much the same concept as Harken use miniature 'Bullet Blocks' and Spinlock use little plastic cams. A marketing gimmick....

I must have given the fellow my card, for some months later the little anchor illustrated turned up in the post, 'with compliments'.

It's a curious thing, and obviously intended as a marketing 'thingy'. It's too big to use with a key ring; it's really just too small for real-world use on even the smallest boat - except perhaps on my Cruising Catapult - but it has appealed to my puckish sense of humour - hence the pics.

As for the pic's 'attributes', that's down to my labeling in place of assigned 'numbers'. I didn't know the difference at the time.

Er, that's it. :)

DIY Brinell test

This morning I have carried out a simple Brinell test on my Rocna anchor. It is of NZ manufacture as far as I know, fabricated, not cast, bought from Boyd Boats in 2007.

I used a centre punch with the tip ground off, diameter of the flat approximately 2 mm. Even better would be a hemisphere, ideally a small ball bearing silver soldered to a steel rod, but I have no facilities for this. The punch was struck with a 1 kg lump hammer, sharply but not with massive force. I carried out the test once on the underneath of the fluke and in several places on the shank.

My results on the fluke are shown in the photos. A small indent was made, as might be expected in this relatively soft steel. No visible sign of the impact could be found on the shank, except slight damage to the remaining galvanising in one place. There was nothing for me to photograph.

I assume, although I do not know for certain, that the hardness and strength of the China-made cast fluke would not be a great deal different from the mild steel fluke of the fabricated version. I would expect that a similar test carried out on a Q420 shank would produce a visible mark not too different from that shown on my fluke.

(It has taken me a very long time to post this! We are in Leros marina, where constant winds of around 30 knots, with gusts of over 40 knots, have prevailed for the past 24 hours. There are rumours of 6 metre swells outside. Every man and his dog is on the internet trying to find when it will improve, so wifi speeds are dead slow and stop.)

Will this thread result in a plethora of Rocnas for sale on Fleabay?

If so may buy one to do my own test on the Bristol Chanel!

All anchors brought in under the exchange scheme and identified as 420 steel will be taken out of circulation permanently.

I am meeting the distributors tomorrow to work out further details and to let them know of progress from Canada Metal in bringing the new , thoroughly QCd CM anchors from the manufacturers.

If I come across any secondhand 620s, I will add your name to the list. :)

Yes. I bought mine from Piplers and they have offered me a refund or alternative anchor from another supplier.

I have to say that I think their service and attitude has been exemplary. They have answered all my emails promptly.

They also made this offer to me PRIOR to the CMP announcement. They have subsequently also offered a new CMP manufactured Rocna as an additional alternative.

Great service and I will go out of my way to use them in future.

One question. For those who purchased a Rocna on the basis of statements on the Rocna web site that it was make of 800 mpa steel but find out that it is 620 mpa steel, will you make good on a refund since what they were told they were buying turned out to be incorrect? Or more directly stated, what they were told was a lie?

I think you are doing a thoroughly good job in PR and it looks as though you will turn this issue around. Can you see the light at the end of the tunnel yet?

This is getting more than a little ridiculous, if not downright vindictive.

People will have bought anchors from chandlers' retail outlets - from a guy in a store somewhere. If memory serves, that's where the contractual relationship exists. That retail purchase will have been made in good faith. The guy selling it, acting for his employers, will have made it in good faith, too.

There seems to be some sort of programme of 'recall and exchange' being organised between the new licence owners, the distributors, and bona fide customers. That's also IMHO a slice of good faith. I can't see much wrong with that.

So where does the notion of a 'lie' come in?

It rather seems to me that most of those doing the 'huffing and puffing' aren't bone fide customers at all, but agents provocateur with other, commercial/competitive, agendas.
