Does anybody know of a cheap and reliable company in France transporting yachts between the south of France and the Biscay coast? Any info, tips in general about road transport of yachts would be appreciated.

I don't know any in France but it might be worth contacting a few in the UK (if you know any) because having delivered a boat to wherever, they are always keen to pick up a "return load" if they can. There are plenty who advertise in the back of PBO.

Cost partly depends on where your start point is located, because the transporter will factor in the price of getting his rig there before he loads. Boat length/beam are also imporetant because anything wider than 3.00m needs a special escort truck.

Most marinas have a list of transporters who regularly call there to deliver boats. The cheapest way will always be to liaise with one of them and to be moved as a back load ... return trip with deviation.

If you are in the Port Camargue, Cap d'Age, Sete, Port Leucate, St Cyprien area, try
Chantier Fluviale, 23 quai St Jean Moulin, 82100 Castelsarrasin, France.

Try to conact Veronique, who speaks some English.

I will PM you with my telephone number, if you need any further information.

here is one web site with an english version http://augizeau.online.fr/ I live in france and if you let me know the details - port of loading - tipping - boat etc I will try and find the best deal..
The French move yachts around by lorry even more than the english and it is all very well regulated... Return loads are from the South to North mostly

For the journey you have in mind it might be worth asking Beneteau or Dufour which have their factories in Brittany and the Atlantic coast respectively who they use, because they must deliver plenty of boats to the south, returning empty.

I won't actually be moving the boat until late spring/early summer next year, but I will need to decide between sailing round (by way of Gib and Portugal) and going overland well before then. It comes down to how much it will cost to avoid the contrary Portugese trade winds. Any idea of a ballpark price? The boat is a UFO34, which is about 10.5m. 3.3m beam and not more than 6 tonnes deadweight. Mast must be about 13m.

try the french site in english..http://augizeau.online.fr. get them to quote - then if your still interested I'll get some competative quotes - I came up that way last year and it really was a pain.

I hope to be off in the spring but if youhave the boat shipped in the winter I can almost certainly find a berth here in La Rochelle - its only a couple of days or so direct from here to Falmouth - IF the wind serves

Having had a hard time from Gib to here last year I resolved that if I was coming from the Med again I would go up the canals to Le Harve and sail down wind to here. did it once in 40ft from Sete to Le Harve in just over 2 weeks - tough but easier than up the atlantic coast........

Slight problem - 1.85m draught. I reckoned last time I went through the canals that the 1.8m max really was the limit.

There are three major road transporters in France. Augizeau, Morlin and Morineau. You will find them on the web under these names and-or "yacht transport". They are all very experienced and used to dealing affably with linguistically hesitant Brits on the phone. Otherwise use the web or fax.

Get a quote from all three.

Good Luck
